Scrap wind instrument display

Re: Yes, Scrap the instruments

Can't speak for other makes, but mine are excellent. B&G Hornet 4, fitted to the boat from new in 1985. Had a problem with the bearings in the anemometer a couple of years ago and replaced the complete arm, at considerable expense. One cup of the anemometer was broken off when taking the mast down about 8 years ago. Otherwise, they just operate as intended.

I refer to them pretty frequently just to monitor general conditions although I prefer the Hawk for accuracy and genoa tell-tales for closehauled best performance. Doesn't mean I can't tell if the boat is not going at best from other senses but I invariably confirm with the instruments.

Re: Yes, Scrap the instruments

I'd agree - particularly for competitive sailing the instruments are an essential part of the mix.

WHat really fascinated me was how well one of the Volvo 60's did on the penultimate leg (wasnt it La Rochelle to Gothenburg), when they lost their instruments in the North Sea (it was either Assa or Djuice I think), and actually improved their performance - but generally the data from the instruments is critical.

Making them into clocks, now thats a good idea, I'm getting a bit fed up with making clocks out of all the gash CD's that keep coming through my door (apart from the one's that get converted into coffee mats that is)

It\'s posts like these

That make me realise just how far behind I can be.
I've scrimped and saved and managed to liberate a 2nd hand ST50 wind instrument to match the depth and speed instruments I bought 2 years ago. Now I find that people are actually scrapping them and turning them into clocks. it all seems so hopeless really - maybe I'm just not cut out for the pace of change that you cutting edgers are setting. Anyone know of any Walker Satnavs being scrapped - think I'll try setting an alternative trend - anyone want a laptop with a couple of hundred charts and some navigation software, oh and a gps?
