scottish surveyors

I'd consider that after 35 years of sailing, being involved in building racing, modifying, maintaining and cruising boats that I'd have some idea of selecting a decent boat. Backed up by a degree in engineering and knowledge of structures, materials and electrical/mechanical systems do I know "as much as them"? Well, I certainly don't.

I use my experience to make an evaluation of the surveyor and his competence; then listen and learn.

You are entitled to you opinion and are satisified with how you manage your risk, but I don't agree with your advice to others who may lack your level of knowledge.

Wrong coast, but not too far to travel: John Hamilton of Coutts Caledonian. Surveyed our Nauticat and arranged for engine survey too. Very satisfied and after having boat for a year now can't see anything he missed or got wrong (even commented, tongue in cheek I believe, on the working of soap dispensers in the heads!).

Ian Nicholson is in Scotland and is regarded as the guru of all surveyors!!

He's a delightful and very practical chap. Now semi-retired, I think, but I'd seen his advert in one of the sailing magazines recently.

Sure he is a nice chap etc. but he is in his late seventies (at least - judging from his books) that I wonder if he would want to - let alone be able to - squeeze into nooks and crannies.
