scottish harbours

T2 is about 8ft, so Seacliff is a wave from offshore then, or it'll be a Goldfinger leaving the plane window jobbie:D

Go for it:

Port Edgar

Steer clear of Port Edgar if you're looking for friendly, quaint or off the beaten track! IMHO. The garmin charts of the E coast aren't bad. I have a last year's admiralty River Forth and Firth of Forth for P&P(Holland) if interested?

I resemble that remark. I would have agreed if you had said PE was a bit of a dump, but knowing many of the berth holders they are most certainly freindly, helpful and a wonderful source of local and boaty knowledge. I always found the staff friendly enough though not always as helpful as you would have wished. They do have a big problem though that the present management will cease in a a year or so so many staff will be worrying about their jobs. Quaint it certainly is, with a mixture of buildings mainly od Admiralty design covering the first half of the 20th century. You can also get regular buses from S Queensferry to Edinburgh at very reasonable prices.

If you venture into the Forth, then Granton offers a pontoon for £2 per meter per night, no power but fresh water. The RFYC will soon start dredging again and so you might not dry out at springs. If you do touch the bottom is very soft mud. The pontoon is protected in all winds, but a strong North Easterly can produce nasty short waves.

Showers in the RFYC and a bus straight to the centre of Edinburgh for £1.30. Supermarkets close by and most club members will help you source fuel for a local service station.

A short walk down to the best Fishmongers in Edinburgh Welsh's.

And ther was me thinking the best fishmonger was the one at Fisherow. By the way has RF sorted out the supply of pass keys for the gate.

Hello mcanderson

Granton: 10metres = £20 and no power?

That's poor show. I was planning on visiting this season ...but I probably won't bother now (thanks for the heads up).

Port Edgar (staff: typically not overly friendly or particularly helpful - some could certainly do with re-training) has some very poor quality pontoons in places (dangerous at times), but at least there are showers and power etc. Even the likes of Aberdour has power for a flat rate of £8 per night, and Limekilns has power and showers etc all for the overnight cost of £nil per metre.

Power is handy for the kids with their wireless gizmos, etc ...and yes we have a shorepower fridge that also comes into the equation.

Maxi77 - Have you been to Welsh's since it moved from Queensferry St? I think its even better than Eddies and that was previously the best IMO.

Yodave - here is a link I hope to charges for the pontoon

I like both Aberdour and Limekilns, but I draw 1.8m so staying over in either harbours doesn't work for me. Just offering a solution to the OP about where to stay in Edinburgh.

mcanderson: Thank you for the link to charges. I hope my reply didn't read as having any sort of a pop at you or your suggestion. I was just really surprised at Granton's lack of shorepower.

Sounds like you have a fin keeler, so I guess there are less options for overnights unless you want to strap your yacht to the wall (not my idea of fun, but I've seen it done).

All the best...

You should try the Anstruther muster and see the fin keelers rafted up leaning agaist the wall. Works fine once you get the hang of it. One year we were lucky and the harbourmaster put us between 2 heavy bilge keelers that worked very well.

As for shorepower at Granton, most local boats are on moorings so they don't have a shorepower system, and I suspect fitting, running and accounting for one was more than the clubs were willing to put up with. If you need shore power then your choices in the Forth are limited.

We were there this year with our fin keeler which draws 2m. It wasn't too bad as you just tend to sink into the mud, so no precarious angles achieved, thankfully!!

The lack of shore power is a bit of a bugger, but nothing a small generator can't fix.

Maxi77- living Fife you can make up for Welsh's with a nice fish and chips at Anstruther. I loved the Raymond Blanc series when he was showing off the quality of seafood from the Forth and he gets his lobsters from there.

I suspect the lobsters come from Eyemouth, home of the first lobster storage ponds in the UK. It's not just the chippy there are several places round there that do really good fish and seafood, mind you if you are eating your supper outside watch out for the gulls
