Scily Boys' capsize.......PEPIRB

Re: Scily Boys\' capsize.......PEPIRB

TV program just finished about attempted 4 man row, New York to the Scillies. Self righting boat rolled twice and didn't self right second time around.

I loved the bit where the one chap apparently announced, on hauling himself from the upturned boat out into the 20 foot breaking swells and gale conditions 'I don't swim'. Seems like a strange time to bring up this nugget of information.

Interesting programme....but it was never made clear why the boat did not self right as per design. Does anyone know any details?

Slocum did much the same when he ran aground off the coast of Brazil IIRC

Not odour of rat, it was a reconstruction. Probably in the pond at Pinewood. Gritty reality video style /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Re: Scily Boys\' capsize.......PEPIRB

- No capsize testing of the loaded boat
- No one-piece immersion suits to hand
- No lifejackets (if reconstruction was to be believed
- Two of the guys took to the water naked or nearly (two put oilies on at least)

A little uprepared perhaps?

Re: Scily Boys\' capsize.......PEPIRB

I shall never, ever go offshore without my personal EPIRB. Honestly. Really scarey stuff and they survived!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

They survived because they got into a liferaft!

Don't think the EPIRB would have supported them all.
It went missing anyway & contact with HMCG was via sat phone.

Fair comment except that Slocum started his trip single handed. This bloke was involved in planning the trip, got into a boat and then set off without ever mentioning, over a pint perhaps, that he had what could be a considerable handicap to the other team members in a dangerous situation at sea.

Re: Scily Boys\' capsize.......PEPIRB

Err, if a non-swimmer I think I would have an LJ handy at all times - and be wearing it in bad weather, certainly I would have put it on after a capsize.

My point is that, with an effective LJ, a non-swimmer is no more of a liability than any other crew member.

Re: Scily Boys\' capsize.......PEPIRB

Not sure a lifejacket would be too useful, how do you get it outside the living space under water? In all probability (if a self inflating model) it would inflate causing your to rapidly get to the surface and hopefully not get stuck in any ropes or in the rowing area.
Re: liferaft, the more observant would have spotted it changed from a Seago when it was underwater to an Avon when it was inflated.
Fair point about being naked, Oiles would have been the order of the day, didn't hear what happened to the EPIRB, as the model shown does float it should have been picked up at Falmouth.
Of course it was a dramatisation so maybe not the McMurdo model they shown but something else. You've got to ask yourself how often do the press get something right?

Re: Scily Boys\' capsize.......PEPIRB

Self-inflated lifejackets can be deflated manually & re-inflated by mouth after diving under water to get out of the cabin. Not rocket science really, just common sense I would have thought.

Asking a lot of a non swimmer don't you think?
