OK, so does anybody know what the actual clearance height is of Scalpay road bridge?

The CCC Pilot states 20m clearance - and I did my passage planning on that basis.
When getting closer I rechecked the charts - Admiralty Folio and Navionics electronic - which both listed as 19m.

As our theoretical air draft was listed as 19.5m in the builders handbook, this was literally of passing interest!

Clearly height of tide below HAT is also a factor, but with imprecise boat height, losing a metre of contingency was a concern ;-)

I cannae be ersed to dig it out but there is a Youtube video of a yacht sailing up the ICW using builder bags filled with water slung from halyards to heel the vessel under bridges. Sitting on the end of your boom would probably do it for you!

I have 18m, and it was OK at LW, but I am not sure with 19.5m I would chance it, even at LW.

Could be expensive if you get it wrong, and there are not many places up there to help you out with a stump of a mast.......

Well I double rechecked my tide calculations - 3.0m vs 5m MHWS - took a bravery pill and continued. But slowed to well under a knot SOG against the tide. Made it unscathed

Had decided needed to get confident in UK waters before attempting a Scandinavian bridge

Who has ever gone under a bridge and not looked up and had a last second panic. Even when you have done the sums, it always looks like you are going to leave scrape marks.

I had the same concerns and came to the conclusion that this confusion reflects the change from giving clearances above MHWS to HAT. We have 19m plus antenna and got under with no trouble.

That's it. For some some reason my laptop is showing what is probably the 2012 edition, when, in fact it should be showing the 2014 version...... I guess that the change was made in between these editions.
