If the hull runs on a cushion of bubbles at speed, and assuming that the engine is also trimmed high, would that result in cavitation ?

With stepped hulls they typically mount the engines a good 12 inches behind where the Hull finishes so that the prop runs in clean water.

And the cushion of bubbles is just marketing speak, but the stepped Hull does disrupt the flow of water more than a conventional Hull, you can see the effect of this if the depth transducer is mounted after a step it ceases to provide a reading once the boat goes over a certain speed.

Interestingly Regal have featured stepped hulls in their sports boats for many years to very good effect. Lower planing speeds and better fuel consumption than similar hulls without the step.
They don't seem to suffer with cavitation problems.
On you tube website there is a very good underwater video showing the effect of the step and air flow. search Google Regal fastrac hull 2015 by boat test.com
They also recess the transom where the sterndrive is set maybe to help with any cavitation issues although in the video the prop is running well below the disturbed water.

I have the GTO - should be delivered week 9 next year if all goes to plan ?, did consider the GTC but liked the openness of the GTO for our day boating needs
