Saved by an oil sample

A couple of days ago I was close to making an offer on a Ferretti in the Med. I've never bothered with oil sampling in the past when buying boats but this time I decided to have a full mechanical survey done and, boy, am I glad I did
The survey turned up nothing of untoward and the boat appeared to be sound. The Cat 3208 engines looked and sounded OK but the engineer noticed traces of diesel coming from the exhaust so, as a matter of routine he took oil samples from both engines. A couple of days later the results came in and showed 4 to 5 times the acceptable limit for iron and copper and an excessive amount of molybdenum (generally found in oil additives). Seemed like the owner knew he had engine problems and and bunged in a load of molyslip or similar to cover up
The engineer reckons both engines need major rebuilds at a cost of about £35k all in. Now that would have hurt!

Saw your boat on sunday whilst in Porthmadoc - presume it's the windy with it's nose pointing to the yacht club.

Is that flybridge Sealine attached to the back of it your tender? :)

No, the survey was done by David Shaw of Ebbtide Marine and the samples were tested in the UK

1995, 700hrs. The boat is older than I really wanted to buy but it comes with an oppurtunity to rent a berth in LaNap and you know how difficult that is

Mebbees the vendor could do with a sample testing too, he must be on something to try and pull such a stunt!
Reminds of the old sawdust and Bannana skin horror stories in the motor trade from years ago!

Any particular reason why your changing from the T48 Mike? seems like a fine boat to me, or are you now going the flybridge route?

The T48 is indeed a fine boat, Clive, but even though its a big boat the accomodation inside is still relatively small. We found last year that Med boating is a bit different to Solent boating. Whereas in the UK, we'd often pop down to the boat for a day if the weather looked nice, last season we were pre-planning long weekends/holidays on the boat and using it more like a condo. So, we want a flybridge boat with more space inside
The other thing we found was that the Med weather is not always like the adverts! It rains, even snows (Majorca - Feb 2003), its sometimes windy and you dont want to be huddled in the cockpit

Hi Mike , I figured that would be something to do with it, I saw a T48 in our Marina last year and thought about all the fastening of the canopy the guy had to do when coming and going (cue Oldgit)

Your point about rain (and temperature dropping to 16c today) is very valid, been working on the F36 with Phil today, replacing extinguishers, wiring shut offs, generally pulling the boat apart etc, went in shut the patio door turned the heater on lovely. Good luck with your search CGN

The canopies on all sports boats are a nightmare and even then I've never found one that does'nt leak so even when its raining you cant shelter under the canopy. The T48 takes about 15 mins of swearing and cursing to erect which is a about par for the course
16 deg, huh. Here its below freezing and trying to snow. Scotland cut off as usual
