sat phone or ssb

One point when ive been on(the SSB) for some time say an hour or more!! If ive been transmitting and chating to much my signal starts to break up,if i want to continue i turn down the output untill my signals better or so weak no one can read me well enough to continue.

QRP is 5w or less but with say 50w or better about 70w when conditions are ok you can be copied well this is when a good antena comes into its own! Im a fan of the long wire-not much good on the boat but the best antena of all!

If you can try hoisting a half wave diapole. I added a pully at the mast head with a loop of 4mm cord when at sea or in port i could lift the diapole one end attached to the transum with a length of cord and egg insulator. The coax is the halfway up and led back to the cabin.

Before tacking you will of course have to take it down!! but once on passage it can safly stay up untill the dedicated batterys flat! but then you can start the QSO by redusing the power untill your signals comfortable to read and your power will last longer!normaly if you ask the otheres to up there gain you can get down to 50/60w!

If you really want to communicate use CW !!With CW you can really reduce the power! Problem is no one bothers even though there is a lot of software out there to decoad your CW i use a bencher paddel.

Lots of good advice from Jerrycat and others including the advice to buy an ICOM 706 mk2 if you need a link to an amature shop lots have been posted and the 706 costs about 750/800euros (inc p&p) But do look at yasue offers but not alinco as they have bad system if you need to repair--If you can afrod it go for the ICOM

Im useing a 200year old rusty Kenwood 140s!!So i may soon be looking for a new rig myself!

the reason i found your post was a call on the SSB.As i intended to be away from GPRS

My reply on the internet could be sent by rtty or voice when im out of range of GPRS wi-fi connections. Depends on the number of replys from this forum happly there arnt to many just now.I have a relay

Its a pity we dont have a net to call in to, just now im listening in on 4.415 and very clear

I was just suggesting a way to conserve the power and yes 5/6 of us are on scheduale from the black sea malta gib spain and France to talk about new ports in winter prices food resurants cafes &wx

Sadly we will loose contact when spring comes along and i go north and others leave--

I just wish there was a net we could call to arrange a frequency and time to call anyone and everyone. As they change!

I have a valid amature call i wont use it as anyone can look at my details address etc and when away today meens break in! Todays criminals are not just on air but computor literate i never give my call when in MM contact not even my MM cal

When i call into the amature net i would give it without the QTH nor MM but happly today the amature band is all but; over.

Ill say QRZ but propergation lack of enough sun for my power supply and to much gin at my new QTH may may meen just best 73s untill Febuary.

Any sugestions to a frequency to call post hear can try!

No never! I almost never tune to 40m band as it very busy! Good band though. I will switch on tomorrow and listen(opps not onboard in the morning have to go out for 8.00am may be backat 10.00am but wenesday yes). Do you have SSB on board? I have just now.

During the last few years i havent done much, and with my new boat which has a little less room,Ive been bringing the rig on when someone sends me an email or sms to say they will be on air. Eventually after a while i take it off again!

Im just looking for a reason to buy a very small rig! but at 6/700 euros there just arnt enough people with SSB in Europe? perhaps non off season!

Thats why i keep suggesting a MM net on marine bands. I would do it but i move about far to much and to far for consitancy.

The idea would be someone living on a fine big boat on one of the many rivers Pisa for example! as if their there then they normaly stay as there arnt the same charges as in a port today.
