One point when ive been on(the SSB) for some time say an hour or more!! If ive been transmitting and chating to much my signal starts to break up,if i want to continue i turn down the output untill my signals better or so weak no one can read me well enough to continue.
QRP is 5w or less but with say 50w or better about 70w when conditions are ok you can be copied well this is when a good antena comes into its own! Im a fan of the long wire-not much good on the boat but the best antena of all!
If you can try hoisting a half wave diapole. I added a pully at the mast head with a loop of 4mm cord when at sea or in port i could lift the diapole one end attached to the transum with a length of cord and egg insulator. The coax is the halfway up and led back to the cabin.
Before tacking you will of course have to take it down!! but once on passage it can safly stay up untill the dedicated batterys flat! but then you can start the QSO by redusing the power untill your signals comfortable to read and your power will last longer!normaly if you ask the otheres to up there gain you can get down to 50/60w!
If you really want to communicate use CW !!With CW you can really reduce the power! Problem is no one bothers even though there is a lot of software out there to decoad your CW i use a bencher paddel.
Lots of good advice from Jerrycat and others including the advice to buy an ICOM 706 mk2 if you need a link to an amature shop lots have been posted and the 706 costs about 750/800euros (inc p&p) But do look at yasue offers but not alinco as they have bad system if you need to repair--If you can afrod it go for the ICOM
Im useing a 200year old rusty Kenwood 140s!!So i may soon be looking for a new rig myself!
