Sardinia Summer 2015

How do you keep the kegs of beer cold?

Flybridge cooler/coolbox (Waeco powered self contained cooler) - big enough to get three kegs inside!!!

Found a big problem today though.
We run off batteries a lot and we have just found that the Waeco unit doesn't seem to like anything less than 24v.
So - big problem today when MapisM came to lunch - the beer started to warm up!!! - almost as serious as Deleted User's ice maker not working!!

We've only tied back to the rocks a handful of times, so are beginners ourselves, but a couple of things we have found. Firstly, in some places the rocks have been quite sharp, even at the waterline. I guess they must have been slate rocks, so rather than being rounded off by wave action, layers break away and leave a new sharp edge each time. So, in your new armoury you'll also need a manageable length of chain, or a wire rope with eyelets on each end.

The other thing we've found is you can get more swell due to reflection off the rocks and a lot of rise and fall because the swell has nowhere to go once it has passed you. We stayed a couple of days in one of the Calanques west of Toulon, and after the first uncomfortable night tied back to the rocks, we moved into deeper water in the centre of the anchorage and it was far less bouncy.

We bust a rope in Croatia because it chafed when tied around a rock doing just this. Luckily we had 2 lines ashore at the time and the other held. After that we used to wind the rope 2 or 3 times around the rock to distribute the load better which seemed to work. Also we started to look for trees to attach to rather than rocks. A lot of people in Croatia use chain loops just for this purpose but they're heavy to handle. Some other people slot their ropes through a length of stiff pipe or hose to form a loop and protect the rope from chafing and I was planning to do this if we had stayed longer in that area

Agree with you on swell. Anchoring with lines ashore is usually very secure but it can sometimes put you beam on to any wind or swell and it can get very uncomfortable. In many anchorages in Croatia it was accepted practice to anchor with lines ashore but I tried to avoid it especially when short handed. It just seemed easier to plonk your anchor in the middle of the bay and swing to whatever wind and swell there was. It's good though to practice anchoring with lines ashore though because in some Med harbours you will be faced with having to do just that usually in front of an audience willing you to feck it up:D

Oh blimey that's hideous H. How did you survive? It must have been miserable. Certainly merits a Mayday on Ch16;)

Mike,

Talking of Ice makers, did you get yours fixed Mike? If so, what was the problem?

Also, what happened regarding your outboard?

Pete

Apparently the icemaker has been removed for major heart surgery so we are all praying for it's speedy recovery. Haven't heard anything about the o/b but it was on the list for the man-what-does so I expect he will be fixing that too

Yeah, surviving that sort of challenge was tough.
But it helped a lot being moored in the bay below, surrounded by nice snorkeling spots in warm and clear waters, thinking of yourself and MYAG stuck in your offices, albeit possibly with some colder beer.... :D

Oh, and apropos of clear waters, can anyone guess what is truly yours reflected in, in the pic below?
You might think of it as a "STB with a twist", in a sense... :D

That's one spooky photo MM! Back of your head, and S's face? I'm going to guess that it's a lumishore light but I really don't know! :)

Haha, I knew that this was going to be tough.
I suppose that also for Hurricane it might be not so easy to guess which bit of JW is in that pic.
Because yes, JW she is. But nope, not one of her thrusters.
And nope, not her u/w ights.
Besides, I'm the only one in the reflection - you can sort of see that I'm holding the camera, though my own image is drastically blurred and out of focus.
I won't spill the beans yet, also because Hurricane is out and about and I'm curious to see if he (or anyone else, of course) has an idea... :)

Still no idea but I guess it's an exhaust (genset I guess) and the reflection is in the surface of a blob of water coming down the pipe

Can you see the second apparent face just left of centre? In the small circle

She has terrible bags under her eyes...

Tricky one... Exhaust would be my guess too, although I can't really make out what it is I see in the middle.

I reckon that Mapism is looking up JW's holding tank outlet just as H switches on his macerator pump and behind that blob of water is 500 litres of poo;)
