Sardinia Summer 2015

make sure you do the swim into the caves on the southern end of the island, a truly incredible experience, something you will never forget.
Funny that you should mention it C, because during our trip we already passed along that spot - in fact, that's shown in one of the previous Hurric pics:

Btw, the sea conditions were better than when yourself and A jumped in for some snorkeling, and we could have anchored nearby.
But I didn't have the heart to insist with Hurric to jump in, because as you know the caves go deeply inside the cliffs, and it takes a while to see them properly - something worth doing when the water is a bit warmer...
Just as an appetizer, I'm re-posting another old video that I made in the very same spot, including some u/w views:

Glad you liked it C, looking forward to having you folks back here again!

On a separate note, here's a pic taken last night from CF harbour, that aside from fitting nicely in this thread, gives the opportunity for...
...a "spot the Ro-Ro ferry", for a change vs. the usual STB. Any ideas?
It should actually be easy for you folks north of the Channel, because the thing spent most of her life bringing people back and forth the IoW, and just a few years ago was sold and moved down here. :)

Haha, spot the ferry. That's the old St Catherine, one of the wightlink boats that got taken out of service a while ago. I sailed on her a few times and might have helped her former private equity owner do an LBO on her around 2000/2001! (I can hear you tut tutting, MapisM :D) Probably has a new name now though

PS, edit, great picture!

Where did you take the photo from to get the height (yacht mast height)? Quite a distance back from the marina itself?

Experimenting with that new camera ;)

LOL, well, you'll forgive me for suspecting that the location choice was NOT driven by the convenience of the onboard accomodation...! :D :D
Yep, new name now - GB Conte, as reported also in the webpage henryf linked.
Interesting reading btw, thanks for posting it. I wouldn't have thought that she originally had a mezzanine deck for cars.

Very well spot! In fact, the pic wasn't taken from our boat, but from the highest of the waterfront houses behind the main road, whose owners are a couple of friends of ours that I don't think you met during your stay - they are only here occasionally.

It's a small world !!

A lovely photo. Only last night we were looking at the huge moon across the entrance to Portsmouth harbour.

A bit of history on the ferry including the reason she was sold. http://www.leithshipyards.com/ships...ssenger-vehicle-ferry-sealink-built-1983.html

Henry :)

Aww - you two beat me to it.
I had this pic ready to ask the question
"Does anyone recognise this?"

Seems that JFM and Henry recognised her even in the distance!!
My pic was taken during the Girotonno festival here a couple of days ago

Small dread thrift... Mike, I've bought 2 AS Bikes, the improved Ultra version with twin batteries and disk brakes. The 2 batteries can be selected in parallel or series for more range or more power.

Thanks.

Dread thrift over.

I was reading about those bikes last night - great idea having the extra battery power.
Here in Carloforte, I've been taking a spare battery with me wherever I go.
Indeed, I went with MapisM and his wife this morning to the northern tip of the island where my Scuba equipment is being serviced.

This is probably not good news for you to hear but I've been having problems with one of our four bikes.
So, about 4 days ago, I chose to use it as my main bike.
It is always good to know where problems are so that they can be fixed.
Well, this morning - it happened again.
I think it may be because I have been carrying a spare battery in the side pannier and it has been rubbing/knocking on the wire that connects to the rear (driving) wheel.
I've got it working again now but only by disconnecting the wires, removing any cable ties, and reassembling it.
At that point there is a multi way connector.
There is obviously a loose wire or connection somewhere.

As I said earlier in this thread, I've been using these bikes for 5 or 6 years now.
We did have a similar problem when they were new - one of the motors failed but AS Bikes just replaced the wheel for us - no hassle.
So, I'm trying to contact AS Bikes now - I think it is time that I had some more spares.
They are so useful that it is worth spending money keeping them in good working order.
SWMBO is flying back here in a couple of weeks so I think I will try and get some spares delivered to her.
We have four bikes on board at the moment so it isn't a problem if the two of us want to go somewhere but we have friends booked to join us and all bikes in working order would be really good.
At the moment, it is just this one that is being temperamental.

EDIT
I've just spoken to Katie at AS Bikes
Really helpful - she knows exactly how these bikes work.
Apparently the wiring loom can cause problems if it is misused in the way I have.
She is sending me the necessary spares and some new wiring looms.
Also a new pedal arm for one of my 6 year old bikes that has been heavily used.
All the parts are FOC - she just wanted to charge for postage.
Thats good service after 6 years (2 years since the recent purchases).

Hello again,

Thanks for the info. Judging by your comments, these things are as reliable as anything else I have on my raggie... :-) Having the 2 batteries aboard should remove the risk of such a problem for me.

Going to the boat tomorrow... long sea trials in Turkey then to west Med and cross the pond in late fall... Life begins!!!

Just in case you didn't already notice, CF is right along that route - in fact, it's a very typical stopover for anyone cruising between the E and the W of the Med (or the other way round, of course).
Do you already know by when you'll be doing that passage? Anyhow, give us a shout!

We will pootle ... leaving Turkey around 15 July, slowly cruise the Greek Islands, then south Sicily, detour to the north Sicilian islands, then Sardinia, SOF, Menorca and home to Majorca. Pick up loads of "stuff" (dictated by the Admiral) then onto Ibiza, Formentera and Spain mainland to Gib. Leaving Gib before 1 October... that is the plan for now. We'll look for all the "culprits" along the way... :-)

Wow, that sounds like an epic trip indeed, all the very best!
Actually, if you have reasons to go up to SoF, the shortest route from the Aeolian (which are what I guess you mean by N Sicilian islands) is either along the E coast of Sardinia or the W coast of mainland Italy, hence NOT through CF, which is in the SW tip of Sardinia (and would be right along the route to the Balearics, if you should decide to skip SoF).
Anyway, if you wouldn't pass down here, looking forward to reading a great cruise report!

Here's my shout to MapisM, Hurricane, Deleted User & Co!!

Tour for this summer is almost underway and I'm very much looking forward to stopping off and meeting the 2015 CF posse on the westward journey. Not been there before which makes it all the more exciting. Few places to visit first, arriving Sardinia around 30th I reckon....... Hope there is space during that week, email sent to Marine Sifredi (thanks Deleted User) so fingers crossed......

Not 100% sure - but I think we may all be here on that date.
My SWMBO is flying home on the 1st July for about 6 days but then she will be with me for the rest of the summer.
I think that MapisM and Deleted User should be out here from around the 28th June
Look forward to meeting you.
