Sardinia Summer 2015

Geez, that's a close call in my books, particularly at planing speed!

What happens with mechanical controls is that any stick movement on any station is "mirrored" in real time on the other one, so after leaving station 1 you will find station 2 in the very same position, and you just do whatever you please, as if you would be still on the old station.
I don't think that is correct MM. In 99% of dual station mechanical cable boats, the sticks at the station you are not using stay still; they don't mirror the station you are using. In some boats they do (my brother's Silver Dee!) but the mechanics to achieve that are complex and expensive, and therefore rare. In most boats the unused sticks stay still, and you can only cold swap ie take the active station to neutral and then start using the other station
All AFAIK - I'm happy to be corrected because I've been electronic since 2004!

Referring toward earlier chatter about inter spouse communications, try a pair of "marriage savers" from www.cruisingsolutions.com . They seem to be temporarily sold out at the mo but they may save a marriage or two!
We will have a pair in Carloforte end of June if anybody wants to try them.
Oi, hang on a minute. Marriage savers aside, a new forumite showing CF among his locations is something that gets my attention!
Are you a regular down there? If so, this will be my tenth summer down there, how come we haven't met yet? :)

Well, the same goes for mine, and also any other I've seen so far.
Btw, I would swear that the same is true also for hydraulic controls (maybe BartW can confirm, 'cause that's the setup he has on BA).
It would be weird if I always came across boats in the 1% niche, but what do I know...?
If you say that 99% of cable stations work the other way round, you obviously must have seen some! :)

Yes, I did find those "Marrage Savers" when I was trawling the internet for a solution.
I think that they are old analogue technology and the headset covers both ears.
However, the designers/suppliers definitely got the concept right.
My DIY ones use long range Bluetooth technology - good for about 500m and I decided to build them so that only 1 ear is covered - SWMBO can then talk to the dock masters as well.
In the MBY report, I have mentioned some commercially available ones from Sena who make sets for motor cycle intercoms.
It would be good for someone to try out these Sena ones -these also cover both ears but maybe that isn't an issue - maybe the sidetone on the local headset will pick up local conversations.
EDIT - Here is a link to the Sena ones on Amazon - note one of the reviews comments on their use on a boat

Yes - it would be good to meet you in CF later this summer

it was off for a steak at the Meson Dulcinea. Regular visitors to Alcudia will know that this is one of the best steak restaurants in the world. Again, last night, it didn't disappoint us

Fill your tummy! Its only tuna in Carloforte;)

Why on earth would anyone order their crew to JUMP?

Very early on I learned the value of lassoing the cleats on the pontoon from the deck of Sea Dweller. I think a jump would have probably resulted in a couple of broken legs:ambivalence:

Exactly. If I can't get the boat close enough for Debs to step off, it's my problem not hers. Jumping is out of the question.

Sounds like good news travels quickly, with all the Brits arriving, you had better get your own boat back in the water to claim a spot.....:)

Our son has just dropped his bike off at transition.
This event is massive - took us over 10 minutes to walk the length of the transition area.

Here's a pic taken from half way down the lenth.

You have much the best plan........watch, with a glass of rose in your hand! :D

Today was the Alcudia Iron Man
Not boaty but I thought I'd post about the event.
Maybe boring for some but this post should be very different from our usual ones.

Alcudia is an excellent venue for an Iron Man.
The geography is perfect and the town seems to embrace this kind of thing.

Here is a photo of the Alcudia Lagoon showing where the Iron Man is hosted.

We were up early - our son had to check his bike so off he went to transition at 0630
Just as well - when he got there, his rear tyre was flat - a gash - not sure how it go there - it wasn't there the night before - might have been during testing on the road to Pollensa.
Initially, he thought he wouldn't make it to the start in time but the support here is fantastic - 35 euros and half an hour later, a new tyre and inner tube fixed the bike.

So, at his allotted time, off he went - there were dozens of starts like this.

And here is the full screen version

Then, after the swim, it was on to the bike phase.
Some explanation needed here.
Our son posts on a forum (similar to ours) called the Pirates.
The thing they have in common is that they all like riding bikes - just after swimming miles - and just before they run a marathon.
Actually (thinking about it) - their forum is nothing like ours!!
When competing, they wear bright yellow shirts with black skull and cross bones.
They then "stand out" from everyone else and when anyone supports or encourages them they shout Arhhhhhhhhh - like a pirate.
There were only 5 Pirates here this weekend but I understand that there are about 80 active ones - all internet based.

After he had gone off on his bike ride, SWMBO and I returned to the boat for a well earned rest!!
The weather was fantastic - here is another shot of the lagoon at midday

IMG_6224_Small_zpszcmbazbq.jpg

Earlier this week, we hired a car and drove round the bike course - it took us ages in the car - from sea level, the course rises 600m.
Then it was back to the course to add our support as he arrived back after 3 hours riding in the mountains.

Our son's next task was the half marathon that is required to finish this event.

IMG_6232_Small_zpsi5efocap.jpg

So, SWMBO and I found a nice little Spanish bar beside the course so that we could add our support as he went past!!
It was close to 30 degrees out there today so it took me three beers to watch my son running round the course.

Then, finally - the finish line - note finishing on the beach - right next to where he started - why do they do that?

IMG_6256_Small_zpsilqgam7d.jpg

No, actually, we are very proud of him.
He is quite good at the swimming part, OK with the bike but not very good at the running.
About two years ago, he decided to do this to get control of his weight.
I really take my hat off to him - not only did he loose weight but he is now super fit.

So, as a well earned reward, this evening we treated ourselves to (yet another) steak at the Meson Dulcinea.
He chose the Chateaubriand (for two people but he ate the whole lot to himself).
I had the T Bone steak - Caption required

OK - back to boating

Our son is flying home tomorrow so, SWMBO and I are thinking of popping over to Menorca for tomorrow evening.
We need to fuel in Mahon before our crossing to Sardinia but I expect that we will miss the fuel berth opening times.
At the moment, it is looking ok for a crossing down to Carloforte on Wednesday but it is quite a small weather window - looks like more wind at the end of the week.

This will probably be the last post from Mallorca - if we get a good enough internet connection, I will post again from Mahon
It seems that people on here like this kind of thing.

Looking back on my post about the passage from Sant Carles to Mallorca, it seems that I posted two of the same photo.
The duplicate photo should have been this one - - which shows our new helm seats being used - well actually they were being used just before the photo!!

Great deal - found them at the Dusseldorf Boat Show.

Seats look great, Mike. Unfortunately Topmetallic never came back to me despite my repeated calls and emails. I'm having the existing upper and lower helm seat structures altered by the same company (Sacirn) near CF that did my winter maintenance

Well done that man.
He has done brilliantly well especially in that heat.
BUT you should be ashamed of yourself........whilst your son was giving his all, all you could manage was three beers........a very poor effort.
;)

Why? I for one, as well as most folks around here, am also a fan of proper challenges.
I'm never shy of riding a huge dish of linguine - just after swimming through a selection of entrees - and just before running into some dessert... :D

Well done to your son, looking forward to supporting him in some open water swim race around CF!
Don't expect crowds surrounding the participants as in Alcudia, though.
But hopefully the scenario will make up for that - this is the venue of the "Masua-Pan di Zucchero" race, for instance... :)

correction,
this is not Carloforte, but the Mainland of Sardegna at approx 10 miles from CF iirc :)

MapisM, thats where we had the cave dive and you "only" the snorkeling iirc ;)

yes hydraulic controls are permanently mirrord on both helm stations,
very often guests are amused when they see the throttles moving on the non manned station,
and yes every now and then there is a the funny guy who wants to fool the schipper who's helming from upstairs,
by moving one of the throttles on the lower helm station.

I never thought about the implications nor complications when having non mirror-ed throttles, which are standard on modern boats, this old system works perfect for me
