Sardinia Summer 2015

Burstner Aviano Impulse 840g

Take delivery 1st March.

Mr Maybh would not stretch to the Burstner Elegance saying I was just dazzled by the glitzy bits (as if:rolleyes:)

Looking forward to some serious travelling when work allows without the added stress that goes with boating

First stop Italy on 26 March. A couple of weeks by Lake Iseo then Padua, Venice and Lake Garda

May
Xx

I would cheerfully admit to knowing nothing about motorhomes but I googled that and it looks like Led Zeppelin's tour bus. (Well, give or take a few specialist modifications :D)

Me too, but I just googled it as well. Crikey, that's some machine. I think Bernie Ecclestone has something similar at the races. This model seems to have a tender garage at the back too.

Itinerary sounds great. Happy travels maybh1. Corsica by road is stunning (I've dipped toe into it, briefly) especially the drive along the coast thru the Scandola nature reserve (Starting near girolata, then thru Porto town, then heading southwest to a village called Piana. The road and the views are stunning

Ref Sardinia by boat, I hope to get there. I'm keeping diary a bit flexible right now so as to accommodate arrival of my brother in his refitted boat (he's planning to deliver it by sea on its own bottom, and I might meet him in Balearics) but if time allows I'll try to blast to Sardinia. I realise that Mahon - S Sardinia is same trip length as Mahon - Antibes

It's actually a fair bit shorter, J.
Mahon-Antibes is 250+ NM (not that I know by heart, but just checked my PC maps :)), while Mahon-Carloforte is actually a few miles short of 200.
Not a life changing difference of course, but if there should be a bit of wind, it's likely to be Mistral, and that makes a cruise heading SE much more comfy than heading NE.
Otoh, obviously the overall trip would get much longer for you, 'cause from there you should still cruise the whole W coast of Sard+Cors before heading back home.
But that would be part of the fun, 'cause there are several stunning spots along that route!

Anyway, you know where to find us. If you will eventually decide to make it, just let us know! :encouragement:

PS: any chance that also SD could join you?
I guess he might well have enough of cruising after Biscay etc., but I'm sure he wouldn't regret making the trip another bit longer.
And I for one would be very interested to see his just repowered fine vessel! :)

Roger all that. Mahon-Antibes is 267nm (the last time I GPS-measured it) so CF is much closer

SD's plan is to run from UK to Gibraltar hard core 24hrs/day with a delivery team, then get off the boat and return to UK. Then maybe a quick delivery to Mallorca, then a Balearics holiday, and then SoF. Can all change though

Hi All

Like MapisM we are complete converts to Carloforte in S Sardinia having arrived here in August 2014. We are here now on engine duties and will be here the least week in June and first in July, and then again last week in August. We are berthed in Marine Sifredi which is very capably run by Giuseppe and Carmela, highly recommended.

it would be good to meet up with any fellow forum items during the summer.

Girotonno 2015

Hi Whiterider, and welcome to the asylum.
Looking forward to catching up this summer, as discussed also via email! :)

As an aside, for those interested, the dates for the Girotonno (the enogastronomic/fishing/diving event focused on bluefin tunas) have been published: from May 30th to June 2nd. More details here: http://www.girotonno.it/index.php/news/item/42-torna-il-girotonno-dal-30-maggio-al-2-giugno
The English version of the webpage is available clicking "Seleziona lingua", but it's just based on Google translator... Anyhow, for more details, just ask.
FWIW, myself and SWMBO will likely be there in those days.

Hi whiterider, we are booked into Marina Sifredi from 1st May to end Sept and will likely spend 4-5 weeks on board during this period so look forward to seeing you as well

Funny just been emailing Sardina marinas!

We are heading from Cannes to Corsica about the 14th July then drifting down the West Coast of Corsica and the East Coast of Sardina ( could be persuaded to the West Coast without problem!) with a view to heading back to Mallorca at the end of August.

I just plagiarised JFMs Corsica Sardina thread for a selection of destinations.

Not sure how we get a better list of who is where when but it would be lovely to meet up as we drift around.

Mike F can moan about his Range Rover ( I quite like mine but it isn't worth the money!) and I can think him for telling me to berth in Club De Mar!

Another bit of advice! Don't go anywhere near NE Sardinia in July/August unless you've got a bottomless wallet;) However, the rest of Sardinia is very attractive and not expensive either

A whoiswherewhen database would be very useful! Not sure how!
I'm keeping dates a bit flexible for a few more weeks because I plan to get to Balearics to meet up with my brother's boat and then we would need to fit Corse/Sardinia around that if possible. My brother would be delighted to join in the RR meeting - his latest RR arrives next month. I have no idea what model (due to waning interest in cars especially drugdealers cars!) but it is metallic red, diesel.

The RR Vogue 4.4 diesel monster arrives next week so it hasn`t had time to break down as yet- so I am still in love with it. Ask again in a year or summink- oh yes it does not make any economic sense whatsoever.

I went on my freebie Land Rover Experience day this week. It is amazing what these cars can do off road and all on standard tyres too. Well worth doing if you get the chance. My trust in my car is restored at least until the next recall/breakdown;)

Just spent a week working on Jennywren - getting her ready for the summer in Sardinia.
We have still got a lot of things to do before we leave but it is all coming together.
Without "jinxing things", it seems that most things are working.
A small problem - my depth displays don't seem to work on the F/B - they have power and everything on the main helm works - only simple ST6000 instruments so I should be able to fix that one.
Also my crane needs some TLC but I might wait until we arrive in Carloforte to fix that one.

Anyway, I thought some might find our this year's annual lift interesting.
As far as Props are concerned, we have "come full circle" and last year, apart from a very quick spray of TK, we didn't treat the props/underwater metalwork.
By not painting them, it makes the cleaning process much easier.
This year, we only used (my old friend) Agua Fuerte - an acid that we buy in the local supermarkets.
We have used Agua Fuerte before but recently, a friend said that I wasn't using it properly.
We used to simply pour it on, leave it for a few minutes and the wash off.
It seems that, using a small plastic pot of the stuff and a cheap paint brush, you need to continually agitate the surface of barnacles to completely remove them - nothing else needed - so sanding etc. Just a small circular motion of the paintbrush.
This year I have chosen to take this process further by actually polishing the props and underwater metalwork.

Here are some pics - some will find these boring but they do show the techniques that we are now using.

Jennywren as she was lifted last week.
You guys in the UK don't know what fouling really is.

As I have said a number of times, Coppercoat isn't as good as a painted antifoul - see here.

But after a quick blast with a pressure washer it all comes off - and that all you need to do - i.e. no painting.

Oooops - replacement trim tab motor required.
Lenco motors aren't the most reliable but an upgrade to Bennet Tabs would have cost as much as a lifetime's supply of Lenco motors. I'm currently buying them from the US as a package so I keep a good stock in my marina lockup.

Then, after a session with Agua Fuerte, this is the result.
Quite therapeutic really, just sitting on a block in the sun with my acid pot, brush and my Crocs!"!!
Yep - Crocs again - in the boatyard - easy to kick off when climbing back onto the boat.
Sorry, guys - Crocs are definitely the way to go. :D:D:D

Then it was a day of polishing - I used felt pads/disks on a 4" angle grinder. The polish itself comes on a block about the size of a Mars Bar. I held the polish bar onto the felt pads for a few seconds and then polished the props using the impregnated felt disk. Actually, I kept two angle grinder going - one to "wax on" one to "wax off" - so to speak.
This was the result.

Then it was back for a relaunch - Total time - lifted Friday at 11:00 - relaunched 09:00 the following Tuesday.
Mostly done by one man - me.
Not entirely true, our cleaning lady and her partner helped on the Sunday. He scrubbed the Coppercoat with a Scotch Pad and between them they "A Glazed" up to about 1m from the water line.

Then, back on the berth, the rest of the hull and superstructure was "A Glazed".
Last year I made a kind if "Youngmans" to form a bridge so that we can get to the difficult part of the bow.
It all un-bolts to fit in my marina store so that it can be used again next year.

On this Pic, you can see the bits of tape that we put on in the boatyard to denote how far we had "A Glazed".

So, it looks like we will be ready for the cruise down to Carloforte in Sardinia.
The plan is to leave Sant Carles in the first few days of May.
First stop is Alcudia for a couple of weeks and then maybe a day or two in Mahon - we will see nearer the time.

Assuming that you are interested, I will keep posting on this thread as the passage to Sardinia "pans out".
"M Day" tomorrow - SWMBO is flying out!!!
