Happy new year. We plan to sail around Sardinia this summer. We have 5 weeks between flying into Rome and flying out of cagliari. We plan to go straight across, spend time in costa smerelda, and then sail round via west coast. My wife has a special birthday about halfway into the trip. Where to celebrate somewhere really special?

By then I could be near sassari or Alghero. Or if I give myself more to do at the end I could be in southern Corsica. Either way we’d be happy to travel a bit inland and Get a hotel for a special evening. Where would you take her (and our two girls,9 and 11) for a really special day and night out?

Inspiration needed!

While in Alghero, you could do worse than celebrating in this place.
It's at walking distance from the marina btw, so you could easily come back to your boat after dinner.
But you would miss something by not staying also for the night.

That aside, there are also much more secluded places in some (hard to reach!) inner areas of Sardinia, which personally I find even more charming.
But I would recommend them only for a longer stay, at least 3 or 4 days, if not more.
If you are after a memorable environment for just one special day, I don't think Villa Las Tronas will disappoint you.

Oh, and if while circumnavigating Sardinia you will pass in Carloforte (in the SW tip of the island, where I spend most of the summer), and you fancy a glass of wine, give me a shout!

Thanks - will look into it. And a vino near Carloforte sounds great.

+1 for Bonifacio, increible approach!

The hotel at Cala di Volpe on Sardinia is pretty special too...didn't stay there in a room (stayed on the boat), but had drinks there, when they were running and end of superyacht regatta bash there with a string quartet on the front lawn. Which I may have ruined slightly when we went back to the boat with a VERY noisy 2 stroke! It's the hotel that features in The Spy Who Loved Me, when Roger Moore drives the Lotus Esprit out of the water.

Not at all - actively considering. Anywhere in particular you’d recommend for dinner?

Afraid not- we spent two nights there and one day got amazing prawns and tuna from the fish market and cooked onboard as we were on a Dufour with a stern grill, then went out for something casual the next night; not in keeping with your big occasion! I think there’s a very highly restaurant by the harbour (name escapes me!)
