We will be heading to this bay in a few days. Is anchoring allowed in the area? Quite expensive in the marina so we would like to stay on the hook.

Yes - well it was 3 years ago. Just switch sides as the forecoast suggests

The locals anchor quite a bit further out than the swimming buoys. We thought it wise to follow their example.

Anchored in that area on 18th May and saw a few other yachts dotted around.

Long time ago but I anchored off Villasimius in 2009, and it seemed to be OK as long as the anchor and chain were in/on sand, and nothing green or plant like.

No problem anchoring just to the north of the entrance to Villasimius marina. Worth it just to float in the fabulously blue water there! If the wind is from the west go around the other side of the peninsula where there is a long beach you can anchor off. Done it several times during the last 2 yrs when we were based in Sardinia
