Having replaced the skin fittings and ball valves in all three heads I now need to replace the 38mm sanitation hoses which are practically rigid. I had to double take when I saw the price of the stuff.....£20 a metre. Am I looking in the wrong places or do I just have to bite the bullet?

Bite that bullet :) the cheaper stuff seems to work harden and can be a bugger to remove, I usually ended up cutting it off

Tricky. It is wonderful stuff though. What tipped me to go ahead with butyl hose was visiting the stand at the Southampton Boat Show of ASAP Supplies. This gave me opportunity to give it a good flexing to see how cooperative it was. Subsequently ASAP offered a modest but very worthwhile discount to those who had visited their stand. I spent my precious pennies and enjoyed easy replacement of my original regular and now rigid hoses. Go on...you know you want to...

Scrooge alert! Depends if the old hoses are clogged with pee crust, but if they're still reasonably clear an economical person could wrestle the old hose back on with the aid of a heat gun, but it would be a double not-fun time on account of the smell.

The price is about right. Definitely get the best you can, it is a b***er to instal as it is. I suspect the cheaper stuff also ends up causing smells in the bilges as I am sure they do leak vapour.

I do not envy you the task for one moment.

Yes its the flexibility I need as it has to bend in quite a small space quite a bit to go onto a diverter valve in each head. I was going to replace it all but may just go for 10 metres and replace the worst bits

For hose which doesn't smell, £20 a metre is about the going rate. My Bavaria was fitted from new with Vetus sanitation hose, and there's no smell. I'd imagine the Seaflow butyl is equally pong-free, and maybe a bit more flexible.

I got my butyl hose from Tec Tanks. Not cheap but I drive past them when visiting boat, so convenient.

Is there a consensus on where to source butyl pipe ? Is there a difference between Vetus and Tec Tanks product ? Apart from ASAP other local southern suppliers worth trying ?
At what age of pipe does butyl need replacing compared to other types?

By the way, the extra flexibility of the Seaflow butyl pipe allowed me to remove four right angle bend connectors in the pipe runs, thus helping the pipe contents reach its final destination with reduced chance of obstruction.

I bought some over the winter from ASAP. There was a long lead time because it had to be imported from Italy, where the manufacturer’s production had been affected by COVID-19. I suspect that Italy is the prime source for all UK retailers, so unlikely to vary significantly in price.

The hose enabled me to produce a very smooth run, avoiding the use of hard angles. I did have a problem getting it to slide onto the spigot of a Blakes sea cock. I didn’t risk heating the pipe with a hot air gun as I was unsure whether It would adversely affect the bonding of the hose’s laminate. I finished up with a makeshift Spanish windlass device enabling me to draw the hose down over the spigot, which I’d coated with Vaseline. Because of the sea cock’s location I could only get one arm at a time into the workspace. If there’s a next time I’ll get or make a device to pre-expand the hose.
Mike.

So there's a tip for members not in the UK, Search for it on italian websites, so as to cut down on the Customs man's share.
