I like Salt Stone further up the ria. You will need a dinghy or the water taxi if you want to go ashore. It is quieter and less rolly than the town.
definitely the best option, for us. Amazing peace (if you like the sound of birds in the evening, as they flock to their night roosts)

Thank you for further info re Salt stone - must put aside my fears of Salcombe one day -I just have this picture of Yarmouth on a bad day but clear some quieter spots.

It’s nothing like Yarmouth, it’s a huge open “river” with lots of moorings so feels a bit busy (think Chichester or Hamble). The entrance is busy next to the town but gets progressively less busy the further up you go. Harbour Masters let you anchor anywhere there’s space so don’t feel bound by the anchorage sign on the chart. Dartmouth is the same, once your up to Anchor stone and beyond there’s plenty of space.

This is the anchorage further up

Sorry i was really more thinking of the general crush of boats etc which certainly isn’t really an issue in chi harbour although some seem to have issues with wash in the Hamble. I was also concerned at rafting noise, lack of shore side facilities but maybe it has hidden eateries and shops etc . I will have to brave the masses one day but Dartmouth so far has always had more appeal.

Dart every day of the week. We regretted staying in Salcombe an extra day once we reached Dart, it’s cleaner, quieter, nicer, better town, no competition at all. Try Salcombe, but you’ll go back to Dart. Dart is better above Anchor Stone though, so go as far up as you can!

Well, we spent one night there on a mooring buoy, granted it would certainly be quieter up the ‘river’. Won’t be rushing back. Disappointed with the town. Back in Fowey on our way home, much nicer imo.

Our original plans had been to use Salcombe as a jumping off point for Guernsey but time and weather got the better of us this year and we were way to late in our time available before even arriving, so it was just a one night visit to check it out for next time … or not.
Either way, thanks to all those who replied.

Speaking of beaches around Dartmouth while one heading west seem crowded the nudist one seemed fairly quiet when we anchored off there last summer and just one other yacht,no jetski etc and very peaceful for paddle boarding etc ,clear water with no jellyfish etc so worth going back there just for the tranquility compared to Solent bays or the other effluent risks of chi harbour.

I use both Salcombe and Dartmouth regularly. They have their quirks. Both are lovely. I avoid both at kids school hols.
If you are feeling brave (or have a bilge Keeler) , head up to totnes on a rising high tide. The channel can be tight but it is worth it, and very Q. Lovely river and a great town to explore.......
I used to winter ashore there.

I love the Dart and generally trundle up the creek to Dittisham etc, and there is much more going on at Dartmouth than Salcombe. However Salcombe creek very pleasant up by the Saltstone and MH always helpful. Though not essential for our ranging up and down the Devon Coast we generally manage to fit in both.

I have to say Totnes on a rising tide up the Dart was great and we moored by the steamer quay.

Kingsbridge up the Sal was cool and they even have a walkashore pontoon right in the town centre. We are shallow draft and though we have legs felt no need to use them just nestled into the mud.

Bad weather gave a great excuse to explore a little longer and we were not on passage anywhere in particular

Terrible place, terrible and the river bed is treacherous I tell you, treacherous :sneaky:
