Sails out of helm man reach

OK I thought it had to be something like that. My initial thought would be that they would interfere with the luff of the staysail. Long piston hanks might work.

These are the ones I used:

Rondo Sail Wheel: 70mm diameter 2 part clip together wheel to fit over shrouds at spreaders, lifelines, upper part of backstay or inner forstay to reduce sail chafe. Made to fit 6mm wire, but can be drilled out to fit up to 11mm wire @ £5.35 each from Baseline.

They don't interfere with the luff, but only just, hence the bit of plastic pipe so they sit away from the hanks (the sail is strengthened around the hanks so not as much clearance as there is a couple of inches away from the hanks). Although they are only in use on mine when the staysail is hoisted, I would have thought that using some longer lengths of PVC pipe will mean they can be used when the sail is stowed. BTW: I've now no issues when tacking as the sail goes through the slot quickly and relatively easily.

If the mountain won't come to Mohammed...

So my solution to this is not to think about moving the winches and track near the wheel, but to move control of the helm nearer the winches. I bought the raymarine s100 remote control gadget which seems to meet my needs just fine.

FWIW, I fitted some plastic rollers on my staysail forestay over the summer and it's significantly helped this problem.

Our boat has the advantage of a self tacking staysail, but when it is not in use the jib-we got rid of the big genoa-has lots of friction across the furled staysail.
When the staysail is in use the jib slips across the polished foil easily.
It is a benifit to backwind the jib before releasing the working sheet- this loads the sail up and lets it find its way through the slot.
Not for those in a hurry.................
