\"Sailor\" Radio

I have an ancient and impressive looking Sailor VHF - green steel case and enormous rotary channel dial - but it has packed up. No sign of life though the power is getting to it and the two fuses are OK. Where could I take it for resucitation or a death certificate - somewhere in the Emsworth/Birdham area for preference.

Thanks

Re: \"Sailor\" Radio

I liked the healthy clunk you got changing channels on a Sailor" Green Giant ". Unfortunately repairs are likely to exceed the replacement cost, worth doing though IMHO.

Re: \"Sailor\" Radio

You could try Greenham Regis Marine Electronics in Emsworth Marina, next door to the Swindlery. 01243 378314

But I fear they will probably say not repairable. Sailor are still in business somewhere up Gravesend way. They were very helpful about my old Green Monster. Unfortuntely each channel has its own crystal, and they are now obsolete and unobtainable.

Re: \"Sailor\" Radio

If you are prepared to parcel it up, PM me I can give you a number of someone who will look at it.They do actually still fetch a lot of money when working.

Re: \"Sailor\" Radio

Many thanks - I'll try GR at Emsworth marina. But Oldgit, you interest me strangely - what is this "lot of money" to which you so charmingly refer?

Re: \"Sailor\" Radio

Where do they fetch a lot of Money??

I have a matching pair, VHF and Entertainment.

Both Work, beautiful tone, complete with crackle on distant opera stations, always reminds me of Vera Lynn or That french song about no regrets.

Re: \"Sailor\" Radio

If the radio you have has RT144 with A,B,C afterwards under the big dial then it does not have individual crystals for each channel.

They are very easy to repair and I think most parts are easily obtainable except possibly the tiny screws used to program facilities and some channels.

As to value I have seen them go for £120 plus in good condition. I think the value of non-DSC sets will increase as the stockpile diminishes as many appear fed up with the squawking of DSC alerts.

Also if your RT144 is firmly mounted those lovely big chrome handles are good to hang onto in the rough

The company in Gravesend moved to Rochester and are Ships Electronic Services 01634 295500

Re: \"Sailor\" Radio

Good info this, as I also need my RT144 looked at, the squelch board has packed in, no longer can be adjusted internally, so needs a new board or looking at.

If you are still having problems getting radio fixed try:

And speak to Nigel.

He repairs all types of VHF radio and radar systems and is well priced.

The term is discrete components. So long as you have the schematic any TV repair man can repair them. Try that with a modern set. I want MMSI I want DSC, but the green giant will make an excellent mud anchor. If you have a green giant next to a modern set, they'll steal the Sailor first
