Sort of cross posting - so I hope this is allowed! I posted up on Scuttlebutt http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=322941 about sailing with tots. As obviously we've never taken her out before, we'll mainly just be pottering to see how she copes, either Deben and North a little, or Bradwell/Burnham etc., depending on the weather!

The problem is that she's allergic to quite a few things - beef, dairy, eggs and wheat (not gluten) amongst other (less problematic) things, so I wonder whether anyone might have any local knowledge as to where we can source food for her?
I guess the main issue is finding suitable bread, as I find my home-made bread doesn't keep so well on the boat, not having preservatives in it, but it'll need to be a fairly specialist baker/shop to find something like spelt bread (which she can eat!) I think.

We don't really mind whether it's somewhere that needs dinghy access or marinas, we can be flexible.

Ipswich would have a good range of shops to cover a variety of dietary needs. Burnham has a Coop at the top of the road to the marina and they generally have a range of more specialist foods (well as far as supermarkets go).

Can you make your home made bread on the boat, just taking the raw materials with you?

Allergies are odd things. Our nearly 19yo has been through a few. Thank goodness he seems to be over the sun allergy - very difficult to live with as he just blistered very badly even with factor 30

Woodbridge has the 'Cake shop bakery' that does all sorts of bread. Easy walk from Tidemill Yacht harbour

I've just found their website and they list their products... http://www.cakeshopbakery.co.uk/products.pdf

Hopefully something in that lot? Organic spelt with honey????

The deben is the most beautiful river and mostly flat! A bit bendy near Woodbridge so makes sailing tricky but hope you have a good sail wherever you go. (Im a fair weather sailor - so not been out much this year)

That's great, thank you very much. I've just spoken to them, and they do a 100% spelt loaf, and a 100% rye loaf. they're very helpful, and if we ring in, would be happy to make sure they have plenty items made up, so that's the Northerly option sorted. :)

Karouise - the Burnham coop is a good thought, I'd forgotten that was there - I'll have to find out what they stock.

Not sure about making things - Swatchways has no oven, only hobs and grill, so unsure about bread, although an omnia oven might be a good idea to pick up, or even a pressure cooker I guess.

WRT the allergies, it's thought she'll grow out of all but the fish one apparently, by the time she's about 5 they reckon. It's not anaphylactic stakes, just that it brings her out in pretty bad eczema, which she then scratches to the point of drawing blood, so being able to source non-allergy items is a must for keeping her comfortable.

Your son's sun allergy sounds extremely unpleasant, particularly for a pastime such as sailing - I'm glad it's passing.

Thanks for the responses both, very much appreciated! :)

If you get to the Blackwater:-
Bradwell - no bakery, one community shop (last I heard)
Tollesbury - bakery in centre, bakes all products in-house 01621 869317
Maldon - Big Tesco, also bakery (Crusty Loaf, 01621 856072)
Brightlingsea - Co-op, also bakery 01206 302488
West Mersea - Mersea Island Bakery 01206 382186

My 2 grandsons sound like your tot - hope they all get over it with age.

Fantastic - thank you very much for those numbers - very helpful indeed!

She's my niece - 8 months old, and I just hope she takes to the boat as her parents both like to sail, and I can see more times on board a boat ahead for her! I have to wonder if we're slightly mad, but then I guess, you've gotta start them young! :D How old are your grandsons?

Grandsons (2yo and 6yo) have both suffered from eczema since they were weaned.
Granddaughter (8yo) has escaped it, lucky girl.
The father of the three of them also suffered when young but does not know how old he was when it cleared up

No help with bread but have you tried homeopath for kids with eczema? I had it really bad and was really sceptical until a friend tried it with her 18 month old and it worked a treat. It took 6 moths of treatment to get rid of mine which was literally head to toe and like sunburn!

Stuey two - we all have the hayfever/asthma/eczema allergy gene somewhere, so the poor girl was doomed!

Laurin - I don't think so, no, although as it's only allergy related it doesn't seem to be a problem for her so long as she sticks to the right food. What was it you tried exactly?

Went to a lovely lady homeopath in Billericay, spent half hour talking about what makes it feel better/worse, life history, the works, she gave me 2 small wraps of dodgy looking white powder which she assures me are sulphur. Put one sachet in a 500ml bottle of water, drink until there is an inch left in the bottom, refil to top with water. Next drink until there is an inch left in the bottom, refil to top with water. Keep going for 1 week. Have a week off then repeat with second sachet then after the month go back. Repeat for 6 months and it was fixed.

No steroids, just drinking the funny water. If it was my child with eczema, even if just allergy related I would certainly give my homeopath a ring and ask what she thought. Friends had been telling me to go for ages but I didn't bother as I thought it was all a load of rubbish.... wish I had gone years ago. My skin is better now than it has been in the last 20 years!

I'm not sure but I think most eczema is at least partially allergy related so I'd at least give one a call to ask.

Laurin - have given your info to my sister to try, thank you!

We are currently on a buoy at pin mill for night no.2, with munchkin sleeping soundly - so far so good after a day's pottering in the glorious weather! We're hoping to mosey on up to the Deben tomorrow and see how we get on!
