I am often surprised by the allocation of various on board duties between husband and wife. Thought it might be interesting to know who does what on your boat.

You didn't include "swmbo doesnt come anywhere near the boat!!".

Actually that's not true as she came out twice this year and managed to make the kids nervous by panicking when the boat heeled!!

So when the time comes (10 years) I am off cruising on my own for a couple of years. If she is waiting when I come back then fine, if not then more cruising!!

+1, except I can't wait 10 years.

I wonder how much the replies about who steers the boat to be based on location. Since we moved our sailing to the Med we have swapped roles with Julia doing the steering into marinas or quays much more, as the other role requires more force in the Med than the UK - basically either using/dropping the anchor or hauling in on a weedy, muddy, barnacle sharp laid line hauling the boat against a crosswind.

I am actually now much more confident sailing knowing that we can both steer the boat in tight spaces as well as all the other tasks we have both done over the years. Sail hoisting though - I can't ever see that being shared until we buy a boat with electric winches.

If not using our wind vane Jane always steered the boat while I did all the donkey work. It makes sense for the strongest person to jump ashore, stop the boat and tie up or reefing sails, albeit Jane had practised both in case I got hurt.

I did not choose a hoist sail option as we have In-Mast Main and Roller Headsail so it does not really apply although generally I do the puuling bit. Also re cooking I always cook breakast, and she does supper if we are eating onboard.

+1 Never came on the boat except for a very short visit to the pontoon some six months after I had bought the present one.

If you so much as shake a glass that is half-full of water in front of her she'll likely throw up.

Been retired for 10 years now and I don't mind at all.

Peccavit - I read M & F as mother and father.

I was unable to vote on sail-hoisting because I do both. I stand astride the tiller and hoist the sail while steering the main between the lazyjacks. My wife stands in the companionway ready to pop the winch handle in and tension the sail when raised.

Hmmmm, I need the kids to be safely at university or something (7 years) and to be abable to pupull mobemoney from my pension (10 years though i have a bad feeling they are changing the pension age from 55 to 57 when the state pension age goes up!). And knowing my luck i will pop my clogs at the age of 54! So the answer is more sailing as i go along!
