Sailing with Nancy and Titty to Witch's Quay

nice smooth editing; gives a good visual narrative.

I like little "stories" like that. Thank you.

ransomophile

Admit it Dylan, you're turning into a Ransomophile.

you know I did as I was told in the last Ransome discourse - and bought one his adult books and read it as an adult

I bought Racundra

I opened Racundra and started in - great first passage I will grant you - but then he has a row with the boat builders and sets off on a cruise with a cook and a hired hand.

I set out with such good intentions - and blow me if about 80 pages in I put it down - and have not since been able to pick it up.

My best friend is a fisherman - he often comes sailing with me - once a decade he forces me to go fishing with him - we both hope that if he can get me standing on the right bank, with the right fish on the end of a rod I will suddenly realise that "yes I do like fishing" after-all.

As a child I did not like Ransome and I tried him as an adult.

and there is the spine of his book - staring malevolently at me as the book lies face down on the coffee table

Sorry guys I really, really tried

Dylan

Thanks Dylan, ANOTHER really enjoyable movie. You seem to have a steady hand with the camera!
What camera/Fps? All your vids seem so much clearer than what I manage to produce.

My young crew and I have just finished his longest book to date Swallows and Amazons - a chapter or two a night - nice steady sailing. He really liked it. I couldn't believe the children who I thought were all so perfect in every way but what do I know....

The cook was Trotsky's secretary, and shortly afterwards became Ransome's wife. The hired hand was Carl Sehman (hence, it is believed, RAnsome, Carl UND RAnsome), a former clipper ship sailor and a close friend of Ransome's.

all shot in HD

Sony Z1E big format pro camera

Sony HDR-HC9

editing on a PC using an old version of Premiere Pro

so far I have killed two camera on the project

xacti CA9 - amazing for its size, price and battery time. You can slip it into a wet pocket and it doesn't mind a bit - takes great stills - there is a report on it on the youtube site

I can fit it on a tripod bungeed to the pushpit

just sailing through orford was filmed with it

as for cook and hired hand

I have yet to finish the book but he did not reveal anything about his relationships with these two people - not sure he even gave the cook a name - making it a slightly less than honest report of his journey - I will put the book on the boat and may well finish it when stormbound in Stornoway or wherever - or perhaps it will slowly rot on the shelf soaking up the moisture that runs down my windows

I really enjoyed the voyage of Jack De Crow though

Nice - thank you very much, again - I watch your stuff 50% for sailing and 50% video-tutorials ;-)

For my rubbish family home sailing movies*, I leave my PoshCam at home and shoot with a Sanyo VPC-WH1 - not full HD, but cheap & waterproof.

It really is amazing how the quality of consumer stuff has come on in the past couple of years, 'tho (as you demonstrate) a bit of thought in shooting and a bit of work in post make all the difference.

* I've spent maybe 6 hours editing 13 mins from of the first two days of our summer cruise last year - that's got us Cih-Osbourne Bay-Gosport, so far....

Thought you'd crossed over - then read the rest of the posts.... relief
Then I'm totally reassured by the nerdy stuff on cameras and all that.
Respect! Four days editing etc., but I suppose if it pays for a day's sailing then it must be worth while

have not earned a penny yet

you tube pays $1 per thousand hits - but only on vids that get more than 50,000 hits

these sailing ones average 5,000

even if they were paying me $1 per thousand on these then that would not even cover the elctricity used by the computer

On the other hand a truck video can get 7 million hits

No wonder Jill thinks I am a crazy person

but if you have any suggestions.....

bit of an experiment here

sailing up to Witch's Quay (Kirby Quay)- as in Secret Water

it is remarkable how accurate Arthurs sailing narratives really are

Dylan

Great well made video Dylan, question from a photography ludite please

How do you get the google earth images onto the video?

All very smooth, you certainly have a talent.

Secret water

Dylan, thank you! The Secret Water bit was inspired. Another Oscar for you, or perhaps a golden muddy globe.

As an east-coaster I am delighted that you are capturing so much of the atmosphere that makes for great sailing round here; many of my south coast friends have no idea what they are missing, but your lens is helping to put that right.

So glad this voyage of yours looks like taking a very long time indeed. :-)

What was dishonest about it? Have you considered the social norms of the time? Evgeny was not - at that stage - his wife and he was still married to someone else. Not the sort of thing the 1923 book-buying public wanted to read about.

Incidentally, I didn't see anything about your relationship with the woman who narrated the Ransome excerpt (did you clear copyright, by the way?) in your latest video. Slightly less than honest?
