We goin' on holiday this week! Not wiv boat unfortunately, as US of A a bit far (for now), but would love to hire a saily boat for a day on south west coast Florida. Wondered if anyone has any recommendations of where boat can be got. Nice grammar. Anyway, around Captiva/Sanibel/Fort Myers etc. type place. Or further north. Or wherever actually, not fussed. Have car, will travel. Just to do some sailing in sun and heat would be nice.

Ideas chaps?

I shall, of course, convey your regards to Dubya. Or whatever else you'd like to send...

No specific recommendations, but did a bit of sailing out of Galveston.

Something you should know. Their booees are t*%s about face so you leave the greens to port coming in.

Would have been handy if someone had mentioned this.

Quite right about the booees. In fact they say "Red right returning" is a good way to remember it. Also I was told "Returning" means going in the direction of the flood tidal stream. This helps where there are islands and the concept of "returning" [to port] or outbound is ambiguous.

I sailed out of Naples, Florida, one spring a few years back. Not chartering though. There tends to be either too little weather or too much, by June its sultry with scary thunderstorms. I found offshore sailing a bit bland, a drift along the featureless coast, but with a shallow draft boat one can poke around Marcos and Capri Islands. Some yacht chartering is done from Naples but I believe Fort Myers has far more. However, if I was going for a day I think I would prefer a fishing charter, its excellent big fish territory. Florida Keys are more interesting sailing than the west coast, but you'd need several days for that.

PS I think you'd be lucky to walk off the street onto a bareboat charter in the US, I've booked ahead the times I've been. You do need proof of competence, RYA qualifications are well respected.

A similar question appeared a little while back on the Cruising World board with various suggestions - unfortunately they lost their archives recently but it would be useful to ask again as there a number of denizens in that area - with luck you might wangle an invite.
