So with such a highly visable thread running concerning a Sailing School that does not get much praise. What Schools could forumites recommend?

I have had a very great experience with "Dream or Two" based at Royal Clarance in Gosport. Did my first ever Round the Island with them,

No Ego's on board, friendly and fun to deal with, great teaching.

Wish I had done my DS with them.

Will certanly do my Costal with them when I get round to it...

Southern Sailing was great for me. Old boats, but only four to a course and very experienced skippers.

I know they are still good because a friend has just completed his day skipper with them and he had a great time.

Yes, I'd recommend them. Four to a course and a spare boat in case one gets damaged.

BTW, many years I was told a story by one of Southern Sailing School's instructors in the days when John Goode ran it (maybe he still does). This instructor had a student, a retired Army officer he said, who objected to doing any of the domestic chores. The instructor phoned John Goode for advice, and was told to take the boat back to the base, where JG met the boat on the pontoon, gave the student a cash refund and told him to pack his bag and clear off.

Oban Sea School, run by a Robert Kincaid. Excellent boat and excellent tuition in a stunning area. Solid performance and great food to boot.

I used Sunsail for Comp Crew/DaySkipper/Coastal Skipper including the Practical exam (or whatever its called now before the pedants start biting again) and I thought they were very good. However I think I had good forrtune in having older and more experienced skippers.

I did my YM prep + practical exam week with Southern Sailing. They were also excellent.

I could'nt fault either although ,I must say , I learnt a lot more about engine maintenance with Southern ;-)

Commodore

After nearly 60 years of sailing without a qualification I decided I really ought to get off my backside last year, especially as the authorities in Greece and Turkey, where we normally sail, are now demanding bits of paper.

I did a combined day skipper theory and practice (nine days) with Commodore in Gosport. Pretty intense but thoroughly enjoyable even though there were a few maintenance issues. Thinking of going back for YM.

I trained under John Goode and later became one of his instructors at Southern Sailing. Old boats, but good food and no egos to get between the instructors and students. The ratio of 4:1 was perfect.

Another recommendation for Lagoon Watersports at Brighton Marina. So far I've done with them my Day Skipper Theory, Practical, VHF and Coastal Theory as well as a bit of fun sailing. My Wife has done her Comp Crew, Day Skipper Theory and VHF and our Son in Law has done his Day Skipper Theory and VHF.
I've known the owners Harvey and Seb for years through windsurfing as well as sailing and they're really nice people, we've always had excellent skippers and instructors, it does help that they are local to us but I'm sure we will be going back to them for some more courses sometime.

I would have no difficulty in reccomending Forth Sail who operate out of Port Edgar. I did my coastal with him, and Mrs Maxi did her dazed kipper as well.
Knows his stuff and is a good cook too.
