Sailing School Fails YM Coastal

......RYA course instructed by someone who, although freelance, is himself is a RYA instructor and able to issue course-completion certificates in his own right.......

Sorry - maybe I miss something here ... why cannot the Instructor you signed up with issue you the Course Completion Cert. and then you get RYA cert on that basis ? Or is the Course Completion only a bit of paper and not examination ?

As to going to RYA ... you are making various comments here about the School - so maybe you should bring it to attention of RYA ... particular to the Gentleman : Mr. James Stevens - Training Manager of RYA. Of course stating clearly that your argument is not with the freelance Instructor who is doing his best to assist in the shortfall.

Completion certificates (continual assesment) are only applicable for dazed kipper. Coastal skipper and Yachtmaster is an exam conducted by a third party, not the instructor,

There is a Coastal Skipper course completion cert as well as the CS cert of competence awarded by examination. I think it is supposed to be equivalent, but I certainly have a higher opinion of the latter.

Ok - ta ... not sure about your UK papers !! Still getting organised over here to introduce decent Licencing ... which incidentally will hopefully be based on RYA stuff ... but that's all discussion at moment.

Just to clarify the situation

In response to various suggestions/questions:

To clarify the situation: I cannot issue any legal claim against the school, as my contract was with the instructor and not the school that supplied the boat (late).

As it happens, I've now spoken with the instructor, who informs me that the school still hasn't paid him (presumably for the instruction he gave to the student they supplied) and he has himself taken up the whole issue with the RYA. Usefully, such a report coming from a long-standing RYA instructor should carry much more weight with the RYA than a complaint from myself.

As regards a course completion certificate, yes of course the instructor could have issued me with a RYA Coastal Skipper certificate (had I wanted to just do this course), but the whole point of signing up for this particular course was to be prepared for - and take! - the RYA/MCA YM Coastal exam.

Given the above, I've decided to let the matter rest, especially as I'm too busy trying to earn a crust for myself this autumn than pursue a concern that is slowly going down the tubes.

Thanks people for all your feedback.
