Bet many of us wouldn't have turn the engine on! My record is 13nm noon to noon!So you want to experience sailing a Westerly slowly, well watch my Fulmar doing this. Bet most of you would have turned the engine on instead of enjoying the tranquility on the Medway. For about 8 miles, starting at about 3 knots and ending at 1 knot, with the tide underneath me as I made my way up river. The water was glassy smooth without a wind ripple. Not another boat moved on the river. A truly magical day on the water that was so memorable and luckily I captured on video.
We’ve been known to anchor if the wind is too light with the tide against us. It’s very hard to do only 13nm if you do that. Obviously not in the middle of the channel, though we've had a few long drifts out there too. But then, not enough wind is so often followed by WAY too much. Once, we looked like having a 12nm day, but ran off about 30 in the last 2 hours under a little corner of jib.Bet many of us wouldn't have turn the engine on! My record is 13nm noon to noon!
Yes, I was in the Gulf of Cadiz and the next 3 days were steaming downwind in 20-30kts. I wish the episode I referred to had been just 20-30kn. But it was a line squall, the most wind I have ever been at sea in.Yes, I was in the Gulf of Cadiz and the next 3 days were steaming downwind in 20-30kts. I barely had time to notice the Gib Straits!
You missed all the best bits.I made it to Valencia from Falmouth
My wife once went into the old portakabin clubhouse in Dieppe for her morning shower to find three inebriated English blokes of a certain age celebrating their arrival after three days sailing from Rye. They amused themselves by playing a game of trying to guess my wife's age. She was not amused. We’ve been known to anchor if the wind is too light with the tide against us. Is this a prompt for us to guess your wife's age?My wife once went into the old portakabin clubhouse in Dieppe for her morning shower to find three inebriated English blokes of a certain age celebrating their arrival after three days sailing from Rye.
