Sailing out of Tollesbury Marina

But, Wells is not a Wash port

When I was at school (admittedly a long time ago) I was taught that the Wash extended from Wells to Skegness, p'raps they've moved it, like all the counties.

Our last 2 nighter, about 3 weeks back, took us from SYH to Dartmouth in 50 hours - but one night off the Isle of Wight, was windless so we were a bit slow.

I've always thought it was about Hunstanton the Gibraltar point.

Perhaps due to continental drift, since you left school :)

We came out of tolsbury lw+1.5hrs gave us 1.2 m over the sill and around the same up the creek more in main channel

Enjoy your sail

Looks like all being planned for August BH weekend, weather dependant of course. Got charts etc for all part from creek to to main channel, looking to find something I can print out.

Think there is a good plan in the eastcoast pilot or eastcoast rivers if you haven't got let me know and I will copy for you when I get from holiday at the beginning of next week if you let me have your email .

Beast regards
Gavin

Look at the downloads on Crossing the Thames Estuary website. The Leavings gives you the chart for the bit after the creek. The South Channel download gives you the next bit. And then the Mersea Quarters gives you the final bit to the Nass Beacon.

Thanks, just downloaded, this trip is going to be a number of firsts, new to us boat, never sailed anywhere this far down east coast, night time sailing and the furthest we've sailed is 78 nm in one leg

Looking at stop over in Lowerstoft so we can make sure all is ok and can sort out easily if not and then onto Humber. We are going to be short of time and would only be in Wells until the next HW so seems a waste. We have from The Friday to Monday to do it unfortunately.

Second vote for a stop at Southwold instead of Lowestoft, Harbour Marine Services are incredibly helpful and there's a well stocked working chandlery for non electronic stuff. I know Lowestoft well and, err it's hardly a wellcome stop over though RNSYC is good.

As a former sailor in the Wash, we always thought of the Wash covering Hunstanton to Skegness but our only 2 useable ports were Kings Lynne and Boston. A good place to learn about tides and not to get caught out in bad weather!

Would have thought the most direct route would be Cromar to the Humber?

That also takes us outside of the wind farms and as we are likely to be arriving at Spurn Head late and probably having to anchor there for a while would keep us clear of shipping by going out. If we miss LW there will have to wait around as we only have a 1 hour HW window to get into Haven which is 5 hours from Spurn

Thanks to all, we safely made the trip after leaving Tollersbury at 14:00 last Friday, overnighting passed Lowestoft and into Wells for a short stop Saturday night, left Sunday morning to arrive Spurn Head 23:00 Sunday, anchored for low tide and then 05:00 start up river to Winteringham. Arrived 11:00 and all tied up, very tired but pleased. Mostly full sun, winds low but sailable with some motoring, wash very swell and no waves, perfect even went through wind farm to have a close look.

First time full night time sail and also first time night entering Humber, ships need bigger lights though we've decided or shore lights need turning off as we get near, also how come channel markers jump out at you in the dark, a bit scary especially when you have to look up at the light as they go past.

Another 185nm in log.

Again thanks to all posters and PMs

It would help if the deck lights on the oil rig support vessels weren't so bright that they destroy your night vision, as well as masking their puny (1 watt?) navigation lights! We had an interesting few minutes south of Amethyst where we couldn't work out what such as vesel was doing becuase her navigation lights were totally obscured by the deck lights.
