Re: Piper\'s Gold

Not going there.
You do realise that they have stopped production of carnation Milk?
Big blow to the home made toffee and fudge industry in Scotland.

Re: Jura

It's pretty shallow all the way through the islands to the north but the deep kelp can give the echo sounder a lot of frights too. The katabatics under the Paps can be ferocious and when that happens anything but a mooring (esp. in all that kelp) is a bit iffy; I've given up a few times and gone to Gigha. Ardlussa Bay's a favourite of mine on the east side. The pilot says it gets swell but it's alway been like a millpond when I've been there. And the bay at the NE tip, just level with the Dorus Mor is sheltered and well out of the stream through Corryvreckan but it has room for just 2 or 3 boats. I sat there once and watched a spring tide run out - you have to see it with your own eyes!

Re: Jura

Someone once told me of a Bay where they anchored and then went ashore and walked around to watch the Corryvrecken - would this have been the one you refer to?

Re: Jura

That'll be the one. We stayed on the boat that day. The pity is you can't see the standing waves from the anchorage. Thought about walking over but we'd an imminent gale forecast. It looks a helluva scramble. Dense scrub and a 650 ft climb. If you ever go in there with the tide turning to run E-W, you'll be locked in for 3 to 4 hours unless you want to be spat out through the gulf. We were in a hurry to get to the canal before it shut (Cairnbaan before IT shut, truth be told) and, with about 90 minutes of tide still to run, we really struggled to crab across to the Dorus Mor with everything up and the 38hp donk going full pelt. Which, when you looked over your shoulder, was very interesting.

Re: Jura

Dorus Mor is a funny one too - Alastair who works in the office at Croabh showed me how to get through when you were a bit late (going East) Hug the left hand bank and there's a massive back eddy then its just like Kayaking as you break out into the stream and do a high cross to get to slacker water. Feels easier on the nerves to get the tide tables right!!

Re: Jura

On my first sail out west I got caught in that going west - hugged the bank too much and started to go backwards - SWMBO has mentioned that one a few times since
