UK to Ireland and back, do I need to:

1 report out and back in with the Home Office system?

2 Fly a yellow Q flag?

3 I don’t have a Q flag, but I know where the yellow dusters are kept in the kitchen, would anyone care if I raised one in lieu of a £10 flag shaped bit of yellow cloth?

You are going to Eire? Absolutely nothing required other than the correct visitors flag, a red duster on your boat and some form of photo id to prove you are a brit.

It's all a bit of a dog's breakfast,

UK mainland to N.I. nothing required,
NI to ROI. Nothing required
ROI to NI nothing required
ROI to UK check in (probably) required (but how can you check in if you didn't check out?)

We did nothing - and nobody cared! We did ask in ROI - nobody knew anything.

We did fly a ROI courtesy flag.

I did the forms to go to the CI and back this year. I'm wondering whether I needed to as they are part of the common travel area.
It's all a bit confusing or is it just me!
It is confusing - the UK official site, Irish official site & the Irish cruising association all had different procedures.

Not sure that is the official position - see here - Sailing a pleasure craft that is arriving in the UK

Looks like Ireland to / from NI the Common Travel Area means don’t need to report crew movement - but do need to report boat movements.
And GB to from Ireland directly do need to report.

Of course, in practice may be differnt

I just followed that link, I do need to report in and out of the UK.

Do I need to faff about with a Q flag though?

I had a long chat with a Border Force Officer last year. Apparently BF was as frustrated as us with the constant state of flux from the then administration. Hopefully, this new one might get a grip on things.

We have just done an irish trip from uk.
carried uk passports, though drivers licence will do, along with any other id if a non driver.
was told, the most important bit was insurance cover.
wouldn't even say carry euros, as used a normal bank card, however lack of cash did stop us buying fish on the quay at Dunmore East.
