Sailing from France to England - Compliance issues

Those of a cynical mind may wonder if this is an attempt to determine the risk level of being stopped by the men in black while ferrying something/someone(s) from France to this sceptred isle. Brand new poster, not worried about navigation or practicalities, just whether he will be checked. Should Kraken be informed?

I see no issue with the capability of the boat, a couple or three years back I saw a UK flagged RIB in Cherbourg.
A 60 odd nM crossing at 20 - 30 knots isn't a long passage in good weather.
Is this a solo passage or is there crew?

Agree, Solent/Chb is quite a popular run and plenty of French ribs whip across for Cowes week. But only if calm and fine. I once went from Lymington to Alderney for a boys’ w/e: flat sea, clear skies, sub-1hr:30 from Needles on Fri eve. Returned on a dreary Sunday, F4/5, many shades of grey :grey: :grey:

Re your red diesel comment, they only sold blue petrol there! ;)

It does seem a bit of a clumsy way to do such research, but certainly not beyond the bounds of possibility.

That's not something that I considered reading the posts, but it does make sense. I always feel that UK and French customs are aware as to what is happening and I suspect that this will continue in the future as they do seem to target boats.

Its not quite as simple as that. You will also need registration documents for your boat. SSR or Part 1. Unlikely to be asked for it, but on the spot fines if you are and don't have it.

On the spot fines? Do you have any evidence you can point me to investigate? I’ve never heard of it in this country.

Of late scrupulously polite though, more most I’d say. I understand this is a strategic decision to encourage cooperation from the thousands of coastal eyes.

Does it have to be a passport I'm carrying, or can a UK driving license suffice?

When you show your passport is it nothing more than a cursory glance, or do they take it and check you in properly?

If you're a Brit abroad I'm failing to understand why you'd even consider coming back without your passport if everything is on the up and up. If your passport is legit, I'm also failing to see why you'd care how closely the border force would look at it.

So I'm wondering if the motivation for this endeavour is that your passport has expired or is damaged? In which case, apply for emergency travel documents:

Caught by one of the small rib ships they now use on the way back from Cherbourg on Saturday coming into Weymouth Bay. Just stayed off my stern to port and shouted across the questions. I requested that one of them hop aboard and discuss but they preferred to shout. Very polite, smiling and friendly unlike the sour faces up on the bridge, one of whom spent the entire time watching me through binoculars!

Only if it's a French registered boat. We haven't been given this information as far as I can see.

It is a Fench flagged vessel driven by an Englishman, so my comment about having a courtesay flag was correct.

Having recently been to Cherbourg from the Solent and returned from Boulogne to Ramsgate, I had no contact with Border Force. However I was twice contacted by the French customs and also saw another vessel which I think was maritime police, but they ignored me as I has earlier spoken to the customs boat.

Perhaps he is worried about the body cavity searches.

Passports for you and anyone accompanying you (I assume they will be UK or EU nationals )
Insurance docs, Letter of authorisation from owner, Registration and ownership docs. Courtesy flag for UK

You can be stopped at random by Border Force, small mobo from France, i would be surprised if you are not stopped frankly, and yes they can search your boat from top to bottom. Most on here seem to have had 'pleasant' visits from Border Force, that is not always the case.

If you have ANY non-EU passport holders on board you MUST call the Yacht line and report your arrival.

PS How many asylum seekers can you fit in an Antares 8.8?

If you are planning to stay until after 29/03/2019 a yellow Q flag.

Over dinner last night I was discussing with Mrs Sandy about setting up a small import service for things next April and wonder if anybody can point me in the direction of the department where I can find out what I can legally import (goods and quantity), bread/tea/coffee/baked beans that sort of stuff.

BTW I hear that Christmas is delayed this year due to problems at the major ports. A sign of things to come.

No need to worry about those essential items, bread is baked in the UK, tea comes from India and Sri Lanka, coffee from places such as Brazil and Kenya. Even Heinz baked beans are produced in the U.K. A glance at the label reveals production in Hayes. Are you worried that the EU is going to blockade our ports?

I am quite sure that the EU will not blockade our ports, more we don't have the staff to process the paperwork to let the goods out of the ports. You are aware that Christmas has been postponed due to the current chaos at the ports.
