Sailing from Brighton to Spain

Hi,
I've got a lot of time on my hands this summer and so am planning to sail my boat from Brighton to Mallorca. This will be my first long-haul trip so I would *really* appreciate advice from anyone who has completed a similar journey. I am planning on avoiding the canals because the boat is 40ft (too big?) and going to the south of spain and then back up.

40 ft is not too big for the canals ( barges are 125ft+)
The limiting factors are the draughts ( air + water ) I have just done it in a 38ft with no probs.See post below * 4 week cruise *
