We are planning a fundraiser this summer (covid permitting). One of our yacht delivery skippers will be cycling from Lands End to John O' Groats and will be running up the three peaks along the way just to make the challenge a bit more challenging - rather him than me!

We have raised money in the past for the RNLI but are considering another charity of choice for this year's event.

Can you recommend any worthy sailing charities that we could help?

I must confess a bias, since I'm a voluntary SI with them , and I've seen their work first hand and the joy that they bring to a wide range of visitors.

I would also recommend the Nancy Oldfield Trust and I am even more biased as I am Chair of the Trust.

We have about 70 volunteers and in normal times we receive no Government grants (although we have received some through Covid). One of our sailers (a couple of years ago) won the RYA sailability sailor of the year award, having only taken up sailing a few years ago. That is the sort of difference the Trust can make in an individual's life.

There are plenty of independent lifeboats who would love a donation. A current estimate is a quarter of stations around the country are completely independent of the RNLI and don’t benefit in any way from their monstrous publicity and fundraising efforts, indeed the institute actually targets areas whose lifeboat is independent for RNLI fundraising.

Being Falmouth based, my choices would be ‘Turn to Starboard’ as Hacker suggests; I’ve seen the fantastic work they do with ex servicemen. Or, either or both of Mylor Sailability and ‘BATS’ - Blind At Sea - both based at Mylor.
