' Often the lock gates were quickly closed behind Dulali, leaving Chica waiting outside, despite my plea that there was more than enough room. . '
Yes , we love people telling us this.
Obviously working at the lock day in and day out , we have no idea of the size of it , and need advice from a person passing through it for the first time.
' The lock-keepers try to be helpful but many have scant knowledge of river depths and water conditions. '
Again , we're just button pushers aren't we ? certainly not as knowledgeable as a man passing through for the first time ....
Just had a quick look at the link,he seems to have enjoyed his adventure, this may be the same chap who came up the Medway on a prior trip, got as far as Yalding before running aground.
Shame he did not continue as once above that particular lock depths improve(well until the next lock up that is ,it has a notorious shoal just in front of the lower gate.
Nice to see someone trying something a bit different and the Thames should be a must for anyone with a boat.
Ps.Which one of you b******rs has upset our man "H" at Teddington,he seems a bit grumpy tonite.

I'm sorry, I can't let that go!
You may have many years of experience of working Teddington Lock & others, but some of the summer assistants haven't a clue what they can get in a lock. A good example of a queue at Caversham lock last July (when herself in charge when not on the phone wasn't there) which defied understanding until I started watching what the assistant was doing. Photographs were taken at the time if proof required! Similar issue at Mapledurham at times last year, annoying when we're paying 000's of pounds in licence fees, and frankly we'd be better offer off at times doing it ourselves.
He would have had to have been extremely unlucky to find most of the locks staffed solely by summer hands on his journey upriver .... i suppose if he limited his travelling to 1200-1300 he might have ? he did mention his poor progress ....
What was the summer hand doing ?
I'm sorry you feel you would be better doing it yourself , there may come a day when you get your wish.
