I have almost come to the end of my quest for a under 8 meter sailing boat here in Galicia just one more to see theSupermistral designed by Amel. Which circumnavigated with a hardySpanish sailor.so quite adequate for sculling around the rias. The other boats ranging from a very nice boat except the starboard rigging was attached to a chai plate busily eating through a bulkhead further investigation showed various of the same class with the same problem. The next in Ribadeo looked great on internet but on being on board the accomodation was very crunched up with too big a cockpit but the real bummer wasthe owner an intelligent man in love with gadgets and modifications that only knew how they worked. and the engine was very difficult to get to.Both theses boats were offered at 10,000 euros. The next was much cheaper at 5000euros but it’s condition wasboarderline project although the engine started. It was badly kept and the fuel tank was totally inaccessible .At this point I have to declare I am not an engine tinkerer althoughIwould like to be fix engines.Thelast boat I was very keen on lying in the ria de Vigolots of vids on YouTube showing a sister ship sailing from France to the Canaries.Again the engine became the stumbling block with the owner getting out a can of easy start to start the engine. In many ways a perfect boat forthe rias.Designedby Mr Benetaue backin the 1960 it looked tough and had a traditional long keel but the engine was such anenourmous chunk of motor a sole26hp it also carried an outboard which hinted at a possible unreliable main engine. This boat is still under consideration. The was called Barauder.Of course at any moment an add for a boat can appear so there is hope.

Other boats will appear, both those new to the market and ones that have their price reduced to come within your budget.

Is looking further afield a possibility? Tedious and costly for viewing when most are a disappointment, but if you found the right boat a cruise to bring it to your home waters might be fun.

Yes certainly going east along to Gijon or Santander good bus service to get there but marginally safe boats are not at home on the rock coast?Finding a suitable boat within the rias would be best, hopefully theSupermistral turns up trumps according to the owners they have done a full refit

The owner has bodged it to make it look good so some mug might buy it. I never believe an owners comment without seeing the boat or knowing the owner. I know too many owners who think they know how to fix a boat with domestic DIY skills and use the wrong materials. I hope I am proved wrong and you find the boat of your desire. If not, keep looking as one will eventually come in your direction.

There's a 50' foot Prout in a NW marina, replete with B&Q kitchen and tiling in preparation for a circumnavigation. 8 years on and not quite managed to slip the lines yet.

I am the OPs worst nightmare?
Because I want to keep removing the logical eminently sensible reasons that say No!?
So, the Bene would be “ok”with a reliable engine ..
Say for example with a £1500 new - that’s brand new, delivered to your door, new in a new package, shiny and new- 6hp long shaft 4stroke Japanese outboard ?

And the owner is open to offers …

So, £5k would be an ok starting offer given all those boatyard billable hours to put right or remove the existing tired inboard ?

Perhaps ? Maybe ? Any family support for such madness ?

Get behind me Satan??

The latest possible candidate that of the Benetaue Baruder in the Riade Vigo is still a good possibility even though easy start or the Galician alternative was used to start up.But amother problem has arisenthatofwhere to keep it .Beforereaching a deal it’s paramount to find a berth which is not that easy as yachting is quite popular and berths are hard to find.the small marina where the boat is has no facilities which the wife is not keen on.Cangas is not as pleasant as it was 30years ago and the wife doesn’t like her native town as it’s swarming with tourists and cars.PossibilityBouzas just along the coast from Vigo but again Spain is suffering from a shortage of parking anywhere near the sea in the summer months…..I am becoming too choosey in my dotage?

I was told to always look for boats with an asking price double your budget, based on the fact that the asking price is a merely measure of the owners greed, rather than an indicator of the value of the boat.
