By the way the family in question are still working, but remotely. Pretty common these days.

Even so that would require a salary around £150k. Much more understandable if working, although I’m not sure I’d want the commitment of work spoiling the fun. I’d rather service my engine

For me it’s probably a little of both but mostly a desire to explore. Modern Britain isn’t really a viable place to build a life these days for anyone who isn’t already wealthy, and it’s making the whole country angry/depressed. I find that with sailing you tend to end up in small seaside communities most of the time which end up being more human places to hang out.
I’m not really running away, but I certainly don’t want to live out my days working for very little return on a rainy and dreary island listening to ever escalating hate speech (and that’s just the BBC!).

I absolutely don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting to change one’s life if there’s an opportunity to something that would increase one’s sense of well-being.

I was just suggesting that, perhaps, if there’s a greater degree of dissatisfaction coupled with an opportunity to change that, it might be more likely for many people to grab an opportunity that took them 80% towards their dreams rather than saving and waiting for the 100% opportunity to come along.

They run Starlink on the boat and have a local SIM card each for use off the boat.
They have three kids, a 40ft cat which they keep in good nick, and they pay for both health and boat insurance. They have also had a few flights home, and inland trips which involved paying to store the boat and then renting a vehicle.

I don't think their lifestyle or expenses are unusual amongst the family cruisers. We'd probably end up doing some of the same things if we had the budget. Fortunately, none of these costs are essential and you can live perfectly happily on much less.

Paying for three kids would explain most of that I guess, especially with 5 flights home, plus heath insurance for 5, and food, and eating out. Kids are expensive

and cats are pricier, i wonder what they shagged to incur those repairs, that boat is '09-'12 so i guess sails and rigging over 2 years?

Most couples don’t even earn that, let alone spend it. To spend £55k you have to earn £100k. People on £100k are the top 1% of earners. Not wealthy, just earnings. Wealthy folk “earn” way less for tax reasons.
Most couples will have a combined income of maybe 40-50k which will necessitate spending of 20-25k

Remember this is in the Caribbean and $5k does not go far eating out with a family of 5. Likewise the grocery bill. Of course you can eat for less, but they clearly choose not to because they have the income to do so.

Yes I see how it can be done but it’s certainly not average or normal for a cruising budget or even a home budget. Kudos to them for living the dream and hopefully they fully realise and understand the privilege they have.

Having not crossed an ocean to get there,from the sofa Ithink I probably would get bored without something useful to do apart from existing in warm water and trade winds.some sort of relation to the people who live there through working offering your skills.

It could be that the UK is just sh*t though? but even then, people make choices some are good and some not soo much, some are good workers and some arent, some waste money while others dont, some constantly learn while working and others don't, some are lazy etc. etc. but privilege? nah that just sounds like blaming others for circumstances.

Im not even sure what musk has to do with anything other than creating successful companies and products employing thousands while paying them a decent salary. and on that note im out
