I have a 120s volvo saildrive
Is the volvo oil drain plug seal just a simple fibre washer?

It is not the rubber O ring type as there is no groove for it to sit in.

Someone on here had to get a haul out ( in France I think ) after wrong washer was used for this drain plug.
So it is important to use the right material.

Unlikely to be copper on an aluminium saildrive in salt water

But I'm sure you were just trying to be "helpful" ?

That was me ?
I had a lot of water in the oil by the time I got to Le havre.
I used a copper washer & Volspec engineer told me by phone that the washer was wrong. The French bloke from the French volvo dealer, in Cherbourg, told me I needed new seals.
The boat was lifted out & I changed the washer & all was sorted-
The washer is a tiny neoprene ring. (It does not sit in a grouve as far as I recall). I did not know that at the time in Cherbourg, so I took a chance & fitted the rubber ring from the handle on my Jabsco heads pump. I did that because the French dealer said that they were out of stock of the correct washers in France. Actually he was a wally because it is just an ordinary small rubber ring. Quite thin in fact. If he had told me that I could have purchased one anywhere. You would probably have one with a CAV filter pack that might fit.
However the thick Jabsco neoprene washer is still OK on my drain plug, even though I drain the oil every year. So I have stuck with it. I do have 4 spare volvo washers though.

The Keypart oil change kit comes with an o-ring and a fibre washer for the 120SD

The parts diagrams however all seem to just show the o-ring.

Mine however had a fibre washer in it fourteen years ago and I've used a fibre washer ever since... until last year when I thought I'd try the o-ring. I'll know how it fared next spring I guess.

Seems to rest against a flat surface..



But two o-rings come in the kit as well as the fibre washer..

120 and the 130,have a rubber O ring nothing special as long as you get the right size .
The O ring fit over the end of the plug where there a Grove just above the thread .

Is the fibre washer just the same as a typical plumbing type.

My drain plug is flat with no groove for a rubber O ring.

Is the plug head the same size as the counterbore the washer is in, or does it sit against the apparent step around the outside? If it sits on the step then it is meant for an O ring, although if the fibre washer(or a dowty seal even) is thicker than the depth of the step all will seal adequately for the job.

I had 2 x 120 and a 130 saildrives all had the rubber O rings personally I wouldnt use the fib washer .

It's a fibre washer on our 120S-E with that exact drain plug. They may have changed the plug design later, which is why the kit has both types. Yes, I'm pretty sure it's just a standard plumbing fibre washer. I rub some waterproof grease on it during installation and never had any problems.

Yep, it's a fibre washer. Looks exactly like the type used on a plumbing application like a tap.
