My saildrive rubber, the one that protects the hull above the drive has started to come loose.

It appears that Volvo suggest an adhesive that is not available to mere mortals because it contains toluene so I can't buy it! Bostik 2402.

The fact that I use toluene on board for cleaning seems irrelevant!

What can I best use to put the rubber back? Is an impact adhesive such as evostick adequate?

It's only the trailing edge and I don't want to risk removing the who;e thing. The rest seems fine.

Any advice much appreciated.

I stuck mine back on about 15 years ago using a two part epoxy adhesive I got from Halfords. Rough both surfaces up first to improve the grip.
 
I've had this problem and tried a number of products. In the end I found normal Araldite solved the problem. The saildrive rubber has been attached to the hull for a number of years, without any lifting.
 
This appears to a common problem. One of my gaskets used to come adrift every two or three of years although I suppose that with two saildrives I had doubled the probability.

When I had my hulls Coppercoated, the Service Manager said that they could glue them on with the Bostik 2402 and then put a stainless steel collar (four separate strips) over the rubber which is held in place with a dozen self-tappers into the GRP. The self-tappers go into the GRP flange so they protrude into the water space above rather through the hull. He said that always recommended this modification.

I agreed to have this done and it looks good but we'll see what it's like in a few years.

Loads of suppliers of Bostic 2402 on Ebay, I get if from a local inflatable boat company for boats and dry suit repairs.
 
You can use CT1, another forumite made enquiries with the manufacturer if I remember. It's a very effective adhesive sealant, I've used it for rebedding hatch window, securing solar panel mounts to roof of campervan, e.g...

Are you Coppercoated? The guys who did my hull did not Coppercoat the section under the rubber because they said it would probably come off even sooner than it was doing already. That's when the Manager suggested the "stainless collar" as the best long term solution.

I cut a piece of sponge from an old cushion to fit in the void & around the saildrive
i stuck it in place with loads of building adhesive from Wickes
the sponge sits slightly proud of the hull forming a slight " speed bump"
I smeared grease into the pores of the sponge & get no marine growth on it at all
Possibly the slight deflection makes the usual film that forms on a hull fall off
My sponge has been in place for 3 years whereas i had to keep buying new rubbers each year.
Stuff like sikaflex does not work as one has to roll the rubber on tight which squeezes the sikaflex out.
Contact glues are not normally waterproof

I would advise against that. Th e reason being is once it is on it will never come off. Use Sikaflex, it is a job to remove but at least it can be removed.

Clean thourouhly and wipe with acetone and allow to dry. (Both the hull and new seal)
Lightly abrade both surface and repeat as above (v. important)
As a glue, use Volvo's own adhesive or better still, Sikaflex as recommended by others.
Press evenly and firmly and use a small roller from centre outwards. :encouragement:

I did exactly that, but using the hovercraft skirt glue I linked to above. It's re-labelled by the rubber supplier so I'm not sure what it actually is - possibly it's even the recommended Bostik. Whatever, I've used it on various other rubber-to-GRP joints such as locker lid seals, with perfect success.
