Saildrive oil

Quick update I striiped the shaft down today and noticed some score rings on the collar which the shaft seals sit on. I will cost up a replacement from Bukh on Monday but if it's costly will look into the sleeve option
I have attached a photo and the collar is No 27 in the diagram

What seals against the shaft, is there wear on the shaft?

The collar sits on the shaft and the seals sit in the collar in the photo there doesn't appear to be any marks on the inside of the collar or shaft
If you can enlarge the diagram the seals are shown as no 28 and the collar is 27 hope this explains it

It will be important that the O ring #26 forms a good seal between the shaft and the collar or water could come in between the collar and the shaft

Regardless of the cost of the collar, I'd suggest you replace it rather than try for the sleeving bodge. You want to sort the problem properly, especially in view of the likely future costs of not doing so.

I will certainly think about your advice and am bracing myself for the shock would you believe the bronze nut for holding the folding prop on is£50.00!!!!!

Update a new bush/collar is a staggering £152.00
I went to see a friend who owns a bearing company and he is going to put the original collar in a lathe and reduce by a few thou, replace both seals with bigger ones and replace both O rings. Hopefully this will cure it!

Thanks for all advice

As I said earlier, looking at your photo I suspect that a fine wet and dry paper will do the job and will remove a fraction of a thou.

Whatever you do, I hope it works.

Thanks Richard I did think about it but couldn't think of a way to mount it in a drill or grinder and didn't want to make it any worse. The cost of him doing this is a drink and the cost of the new seals and O rings with a mates rate discount so seemed the best way to go.

Thanks again

one assumes that it really will only be a very few thou as one does not want to go through the case hardened surface of the shaft. If the scoring is light the seals should cope Ok otherwise that would have me concerned about depth of cut
But if it works then you have done what all good sailors learn to do over the years
