Saildrive oil

Seal were replaced last year as I say there doesn't seem to be any water in it

the milkiness is due to water. The oil should come out as clear as it was when it went in if there is no water getting in.

Did yourenew the seal on the drain screw when you renewed the shaft seals and also the O rings between the gear housing and the bearing carrier. Is the shaft worn?

Yes the drain screw gasket was
Replaced along with both oil seals and the rubber o ring gasket
What I can't understand is why if it is water why it isn't separating out and the oil floating on top ?

The oil is designed to retain the water as an emulsion.

Here's the apparatus I used many years ago for determining the demulsification rate of oils

Just a thought but if the seals were changed because they had gone, is there any possibility that some water/oil might have been trapped in the drive from the previous leak. Did you flush it through at all before refilling?

If there were some residual water, it might be that if you refill it and run it again (in the water of course), it might stay clear.

It would be a gamble though as you don't want to have to haul her out again.

Hi yes they were charged as they had failed in fact one was in the wrong way around. I flushed it through a few times with flushing oil and thought it was ok because last time it was coming out of the dipstick like mayonnaise. This time there ws nothing just decided to change it as part of routine maintainance
I just want to sort this once and for all so. I will get it sleeved fit new seals new o ring ,new fibre washer on drain plug and hope for the best

If it is a 120 VP saildrive the "washer" is an O ring.

I made the mistake of not fitting the correct neoprene O ring on the drain plug & ended up paying £ 250-00 for a haul out in Cherbourg
I found it hard to accept that the washer was at fault esp as the French divs said a leak through the plug was impossible. I was not able to get the replacement seals in Cherbourg so i changed the washer as a last resort
guess what - no trouble since. £250-00 cost for a 20 p washer
i now have 6 spares on board

Quick update I striiped the shaft down today and noticed some score rings on the collar which the shaft seals sit on. I will cost up a replacement from Bukh on Monday but if it's costly will look into the sleeve option
I have attached a photo and the collar is No 27 in the diagram

The seals are meant to be back to back

Can you feel those score lines with your fingernail? I must say that I can't see any grooves at the top and bottom edges of the collar, in which case you could probably mount the collar on a drill or similar and fetch out the marks with very fine wet and dry.

On the other hand if a new collar is not a ridiculous cost, then you might as well replace it having got that far.

Being from Yorkshire, my first instinct is always to bodge it!
