Hi
Engine volvo penta MD22l, saildrive 120s. Boat Bavaria 38 ocean
Replacing gattor/seal. Have dismantled exhaust and cables and removed 6 bolts, three each side which are holding gearbox to engine and slide engine forward per instructions whilst trying to hold gearbox back. Unable to disengauge gear box/saildrive......wiggle, pulled on gearbox and leg. Am I missing something? Any advice appreciated
John

That's all I did to separate my 120S from my Volvo 2001.

Are you keeping the engine level with wooden blocks?

When you get it off, it will be worth checking the splines on the gearbox input shaft for wear whilst you can.

Are you also supporting the saildrive leg from beneath? And you shouldn't have to 'hold it back', you shouldn't release the aft support from it until the leg is free of the engine. Get the engine and leg both independently properly and firmly supported, pull the engine forward and it should pop out easily. Sounds like there's a lot of weight on the driveshaft because things aren't supported.

No only got have support under sump, instructions seemed to indicate support under gear box on reconnecting.....think that is where I am going wrong!!! Will use supporting rod through gearbox and block up and retry again. Thanks again for for advice....appreciated

Cantata's comment has reminded me that I had to support the gearbox as well. It only has a single engine mount.

Hi John,
I definitely think you need to support the sail drive from below. Established method is to support the sail drive leg with a jack from outside the boat. I wrote up my experiences of changing the sail drive seals and engine mounts on my 3YM30/SD20 and will send you a copy if you p.m. Me
Cheers. Martin
