Having just sorted out my last problem (holding tanks blocked) I discovered that my cooling water intake was blocked. I had to borrow a snorkel and mask off one of my neighbours and clear the weed and barnacles off the intakes on the drive leg. Given that I had paid a substantial amount to have the saildrive antifouled in accordance with volvo penta's recommendations in March I am a little peeved to find out 3 months later it is ineffective - The boat is kept on a swing mooring with good tidal flow. Has anyone else had a similar experience? I have spoken to Volvo-Penta and they admit their antifoul is pretty useless.

Can't help, I'm afraid. I am fortunate that I have an outdrive, so can raise it to scrub off the growth, but I've lost count of the number of posts on these boards asking if anyone knows a good saildrive/outdrive antifoul. International Trilux used to be recommended but I read a post a while back, suggesting that the formulation was changed last year (presumably because it was too toxic) and is no longer as good as it was. I sprayed something on (can't remember what it was, now) in April and it's worse than useless.

Goggles on, and over the side, I fear................

Saildrive legs are made from cast aluminium alloy, and need special antifoul paint that does not contain the usual copper. Unfortunately it is nowhere as near as effective as normal antifoul. Bad luck I'm afraid, but VP are about right in what they say.

If you redo it yourself make sure you put on the correct paint. Blakes or International can advise. Don't trust a chandler's opinion, they often don't know, and a mistake could be very costly.

or alternatiovely cover the aluminium with something like VC tar or epoxy as a barrier to the a/f, and then paint normal antifoul.

We always use International Trilux on our saildrive and prop, seems to work very well.

Hi....I just replaced the Yanmar motor /saildrives on my cat and antifouled as I always have with the same stuff the local fishermen use, copper and all. I make sure the anti-corrosion zincs aren't covered, and the legs stay very clean. The old legs were in very good shape corrosion-wise after 12 years of such use in the Aegean.
That's my experience...has anyone actually had serious corrosion problems due to use of copper antifouling on saildrive legs or is this just another myth?
Cheers....R

I use Trilux. I'm in an area of relatively high fouling in a locked marina and I come out once a year for a scrub down/antifoul. So far Trilux hsa worked OK.

I have use a product from International, which is designed for this purpose, it has a prima and a top coat, both in spray cans. one can will last several seasons. When my yacht comes out at the end of the season the sail drive it is very clean, infact better than the rest of the hull.

I have used for the last 5 years International MPX for propellers/outdrives and the results are excellent, 2 or 3 coats needed which isn`t difficult as it dries in 2 hours, comes in 375mltr tin from force 4 cost £14.40 at the time, I use it on volve 2002 saildrive and prop (aluminium) still using original tin.

Yup I would agree about MPX from International. Now called Trilux.
