The latest copy of Riviera Reporter, a very comprerhensive mag for expats on the riviera, reports that so far this seasonthere havebeen 38 deaths due to watersports.

Some of these have inevitably been between sail/power boats and ...."let the court note that the sailing boat was not showing a motoring cone" and "let the court note that the statonary vessel into which drove the high-speed jet-ski was not showing an anchor ball".

It's always seemed a bit much to me that sailboats under power need to show the cone - yet they are as "obviously" motoring (with no sails up) as a slow-moving powerboat which shows nothing at all in daylight.

Nonetheless, obviously worth wearing the right signals, and that means the almost-never-seen-in-med motoring cone, and the anchor ball.

I thought you only had to show a motoring cone if you have a sail/sails up and it is not clear whether you are sailing or motorsailing?
If you motor without sails up you are treated a s motorboat.

I'd rather be sailing... :)

As dickh comments, the motoring cone is only required if under power with the sails up - with the sails down you are a motor vessel.

Interestingly the Motoring cone is the only signal you make that cedes rights to other vessels. All others claim addition status.

I am fairly good about using the Anchor Ball; partly because when I am at anchor it is no problem to hoist it, and partly because it I am not flying (or wearing?) it and another boat hits me (esp a sailing vessel) then I would be at least partly in the wrong.

On the other hand I rarely use a motoring cone. Partly because the times when I am motor-sailing (usually entering or leaving harbour, especially Portsmouth) are times when I am just too busy to prance about on the foredeck hoisting it, and partly because it is difficult to imagine a situation in which not showing it would contribute to a collision.

Motoring Cone

I was under the impression it was a signal that an instructor or examiner was on board.

Re: Motoring home

I was doing this the other night at a lick more than 30 and the Great Gatso flashed at me
Let it be known to the court that I seem to be entering a period of incontinence and was therefore proceeding at a tad more than the permitted rate of velocity to prevent a damp seat and grundies.

I returned to the scene of perpetration of said offence some time later and am happy to report that the blasted thing will not be flashing at anyone else until someone gives its eyes a wash with white spirit

Re: Motoring details

I belive that your au pair, Celine Muriel Lefevre, address 6210 appt 3b, Rue Carnot, Aix-en-Provence, Bouche du Rhone, France was driving at the time. You will need to declare the driver and their address when the form comes through. The reason I know this is that the vehicle was at that moment my property albeit with you as keeper and therefore under our company insurance. I confidently expect the authorities to attend to the matter, apprehend the culprit and punish this heinous crime.
