SAIL NUMBERS

Can anyone persuade me why I should have one on a small motor sailer? (even if it's free to me as a member).
Some boats around here are 1234C instead of GBR1234N.
I assume the C is for Clyde. Do other sailing areas have their own registration systems?

Ah Pierre, but the RYA one is free! I would have to balance the cost of the CYC reg against the extra plastic required for the RYA one!!!
I'll probably just call myself C (for claymore) followed by a random number. That'll confuse the issue, but it will be unique due to the rough cut of the fablon!

The sail numbers to stick on your sails are not free, plus for racing these days, they like them on all sails and once stuck-on, your sails lose second-hand value (if your into that sort of thing).

Contrary to popular but wrong information often posted here:

"The CYCA is authorised (ref RYA Prescription G2 to Appendix G of the Racing Rules of Sailing) to issue C- suffix sail numbers. These are internationally-valid and may optionally be preceded by "GBR". Numbers are normally issued in sequence. Out-of-sequence "cherished" numbers may be issued, when available, at an additional charge."

My sail number is 3346C and is internationally recognised.

More detail can be had at the CYCA Website

One other important benefit - even for non racers is that it helps potential rescuers to identify the correct yacht.

Donald

Not exactly difficult to get off...

An identical boat to us did the commodore's cup a few years back then was sold. As the sails did not add to the value of the boat they were sold separately. We got them for a song and had the numbers changed for peanuts by the sailmaker.
Sails were only cheap because we were the only other competitve boat of that type, so it was sell them to us or not at all.
