I have just been allocated a sail number for my boat for the round the isle of wight race. In the forum's collective wisdom, what's the best way for getting numbers on the mainsail or do I have to send it away ?

It is correct that you could get sail number dodgers made up ( Oceanworld in Cowes do them for about 25 to 30 pounds each) however these are additional to the requirement for numbering the sail in many races ( including the RTI where I think they recommend the optional dodgers).

This is from this years notice of race

6.7 Every boat shall carry a unique sail number on her sails which is in accordance with RRS 77 and Appendix G, and which is identical to that appearing on her entry form. Competitors should pay particular attention to the sizes of characters and their placing as required by Appendix G1.2 (b).

Try a sailmaker for the numbers which are self adhesive black Dacron. I think Arun Sails might have them for order (need some myself). You only need the 9953T (or whatever) and not the GBR unless you are competing abroad.

I pencilled some lines on the sail to get everything straight before sticking them on with heart in mouth but it went OK

Good luck with race

Don't forget to put the starboard ones above the port. Also, don't try and stick them "back to back" as they'll be illegible if the sun shines.

Offer them up on your tracings and peel the backing off as you go, otherwise you'll stretch them out of shape.

Another tip to make them stick to old sails is to iron the backs of them with a very cool iron, once you've got them stuck down.
