Sail makers

I had excellent service from Parker & Kay (aka OneSails) at Levington. When I needed a new main, Jon was very happy to discuss my sailing style, aspirations for the sail, sail optiions (eg FB or traditional) and fabric characteristics. And was happy to agree a sensible price for the job.
V. satisfied.

+1

it's a shame to hear someone had a bad experience of Wilkinsons. Based purely on my current relationship with Cindy and Mick on other jobs I have found them to be nothing but helpful, resourceful, friendly and reasonable.

Advantage Sails in Brightlingsea made me some great sails, stackpack, spray hood and dodgers for the Cutlass - measured to mast and boom not to any predestined sail size. The main was a little too full in the roach (part of sail not the river) for my liking and this was sorted quickly and at no charge.

Any recommendations for sail makers on the east coast?
So that is about all of them! Good luck choosing. Local worked for me.

Mark at Advantages Sails is doing two new & refurbing one for me, to be delivered next week but if anywhere as good as the overall cover, should be good.

Had a very bad experience with Jeckells a few years ago and wouldn't go back to them.

For sails that set nicely, and hold their shape, John Parker at One sails Parker & Kay has not let me down over the past 30 years. Five years ago, I sold my Westerly Storm which was raced and cruised with the Dacron sails John Parker had supplied ten years previously, and they still set well and could be flattened in a blow. Good sails like this don't just allow you to point a bit higher but produce more drive and less heeling moment - this makes going to windward more comfortable, which really matters to cruising folk, although many don't seem to appreciate it.

The new white sails John made for our current Moody are coming up for their fourth birthday in June and about 2000 miles - they still set well and look beautiful. I have over the years had good service from some of the other makers mentioned here, but none have matched the build quality and longevity of John's sails. The change from Parker & Kay's association with the Quantum group to One Sails has not had the slightest adverse impact and was driven, as I understand it, by a desire to cut costs while maintaining quality.

I am completely mystified by the one adverse comment on Wilkinson Sails; I have used Mick at Burnham for canvas work over the past 15 years and always found him friendly, helpful and very reasonably priced. The loft is always deserted when I go past these days, so perhaps they've stopped trading there - I really don't know. He made a really good cockpit enclosure for the Moody, includung the stainless tube work, at a fraction of the price quoted by others, and it stows away really neatly. It has stood at SYH throughout this winter's gales!

Mick retired last year, and only takes on work he wants to.... if you haven't got his number now, I doubt you will.

In case it's of any use, we used Kemp sails for our fully battened main and 3/4 battened mizzen plus the two stack pack systems.
Met Rob Kemp at the boat show and they were the best on price and, most importantly, being able to do what we needed.
Excellent quality and service and still really good nearly seven years later.
Oh, and I just got an email from them saying they now do 0% finance...... http://www.kempsails.com/news/35-0-finance.html

Just to clarify Mick @Wilkinson sails Burnham has not retired yet but is thinking of going into semi-retirement and can be contacted on his mobile 0774 8877526 and as to to dazed kipper comments in my experience "a companies response is directly attributable to the customers attitude ?? " wallet will.

Jeckells of Wroxham for me, had a suit of sails made in 2011, the headsail of which was never good, Having spoken to Chris Jeckells ( MD of the company) he arrived personally to take a look himself.
Chris then offered to make a new sail 10% larger as he felt that 130% would not be the right size. Within three days a brand new 140% was delivered and fitted for the weekend race !
Sadly, and not due to the sailmaker, the fabric of the sail was missing a lot of filler, when Chris was informed, He immediately apologised and built a third headsail which was delivered within the week.

Although this may read like a catalogue of disasters I can only say that this company have built an excellent mainsail and at their own cost THREE headsails in order to keep a satisfied customer.
That is in my humble opinion customer service at it's best and something sadly lacking in society today !

Adm sails based in maldon, Essex . Biased opinion but very good.

Join in the forum a bit more and your next post will seem a little less biased! :-)

When someone had a pop at my business on a forum, I nearly posted a much more extreme response to MR Unreasonable's comments. In the end I didn't bother as some of my other customers had jumped to my defence, as they have also done here for Wilkinsons.

That's worth a lot IMO.
