Sahara Sand

I was once berthed in Sliema in Malta when the Sahara dumped about an inch of sand on deck. Spent the morning sweeping and washing down and when I went on deck the next morning the wind had gone round and there was bloody grey ash everywhere from Mt Etna which was having one of it's funny turns...

Friend from around there (Vilamoura) that I sailed to Gib with a few times in a classic 36 cold moulded sloop, decide to go further. So bolted on a windvane and set off south. He was off Africa when the winds deposited huge amounts of the sand. Built up to a cm or more on the rigging's windward side and he lived and breathed sand for weeks after. It got everywhere. More weeks to clean it out.
Ended up in Rio for the Carnival.

We got heavily coated with Saharan sand sand in Mindelo Cape Verde in Dec 2012 and never did get rid of it all; I recall washing/wiping it out beneath the cockpit sole when replacing rudder seals and bearings in NZ in 2020.

We get Sahara sand almost everywhere we go. Crazy eh?

The real problem is that the Sahara sand only comes during a hose pipe ban

In the Canaries there is an easterly wind event a few times a year called calima. Being relatively close to the Sahara, cleaning up is a forever job. The sand is very fine, like talcum powder. Once this fact of nature is accepted, it 8s OK to live with albeit a tad uncomfortable at times.
