Anyone have any experience of the Saga 26 HT?

Any thougths/ wisdom to share?

Ticks a lot of our boxes, although maybe a little underpowered it could work well for a short distance coastal cruiser.

Single Yanmar 85Hp on a shaft plus bow thruster.

Here is one for sale in Lymington -
1999 Saga 26HT Cruiser for sale - YachtWorld

She has a turbocharged Yanmar 4JH to produce this 85 hp - the 'standard' version of the 4JH (no turbo) produces approx 56 hp.

Re how she 'maybe a little underpowered', what sort of cruising speed would you ideally want from the boat that you buy?

I viewed that boat today which prompted this thread...

If it could cruise at 15 knots that would be better than maxing out around this figure, which is a realistic top speed for this boat

easy access to the yanmar, do you realy need that speed ?
check that opening roof for leaks, i have seen some Saga's with roof 'improvements' - assume due to leaks
cabin seating looks a bit low, can you see out from there ?
Aquador 26HT has a central galley

I had one for 5 years. Great little seagoing boats for their size. The max speed was about 14-15 knots (96hp) on a good day, realistically cruising around 11 knots. So great for inland and coastal if you are not in a rush. Good socialising cockpit. The soft top was a real faff to take off, I made a replacement hard top with 2 hatches which was a major improvement. I sold my 2001 model 6 years ago for £27K! ( At the time, there were 5 others on the market)

Thanks for the info...

If yours was 96Hp and this one 85, I suspect top speed will be closer to 13-14 knots then.

The social cockpit is one of the biggest draws to this boat. Looks comfy enough for 6 people.

With the soft top, is the any way to lock it in place from a security point of view?

Yes prices have jumped right up in the last 17months, we are seeing approx 20% increase in value for this type/value boat.

Did you have any other issues with the boat? There is very little out there about these boats, I will give Wessex Marine a call today to do some digging.

Basically there is no security in the cockpit area as you only have to unzip the sides which is of course common with many boats. I secured the chartplotter so it was difficult to remove, initially I just took it off and stowed it in the cabin. I had to replace the gearbox but I think I was just unlucky as Yanmars have a pretty good reputation generally I believe. Otherwise no other major issues. Saga boats make good quality boats, I liked them so much, I bought another one (Saga 315).

There is a nice review of the Saga 26 in the March 2020 issue of Motorboat Owner, a free online magazine - they have just stopped publishing, but their website is still up -

Alternatively, if you would like a copy, I have it downloaded and can email it to anybody who is interested (it is too large to attach here).
