I am looking for a safe place to leave my yacht around the Saronic Gulf this summer, preferably on the Peleponese coast or local islands. Does anyone have experience or suggestions of any yards or reliable guardiennage people.

Do you mean POROS harbour.
I have Rod Heikell pilot book and checking it out.
How safe to leave yacht in summer, I am told that ribs come from athens to rob boats.
Do you have any contacts there for guardiennage?

I think ,he has either made a mistake ,or does not know the area,Pilos is in a large bay called Ormos Navarinou ,on the west side of Peloponnisos and is technicaly the South Ionion. I can help you if you want Poros or Soronics Islands cheers bobt

Frank\'s......

...is just about the only place in the area appropriate to someone leaving a boat and being sure that it will be OK. Porto Heli is a well protected harbour with a couple of "Hurricain Holes" in the approaches

All the other harbours are either too small, like Ermione of crammed full of bustling charter boats three deep like Hydra or Baltiza Creek.

The only places on the Pelloponisos northern coast, Astrous & Lehonidion are partly open to the south and again more suitable to transient yachts.

I certainly wouldn't leave a boat in Poros or Aegina either garded or not.

Somewhere like Lannion (Olympic Yard) although a little further north is not only very secure but has the advantage of being handy for Venizelos Airport. You leave your boat at Kalamaki at your peril! My steering wheel got swapped for a broken one whilst our guardian was out sailing.

Zea is good although a little expensive. I know a guy there who would might be willing to take on yet another charge.

Try Methana if you don't mind your anchor chain changing colour (sulphuretted water). Cleans your bottom off though. Electricity available. Frequent ferries to Piraeus.

Or a mooring opposite Poros Island (yard on mainland), or a mooring in Porto Heli (mentioned above).

Alongside in Monemvassia is possible, but it's a long way to travel to civilisation.

Be radical. Go to the new marina in Syros; harbour charges only (Ca €3 a day, Nov 2006) and frequent ferries to Piraieus.

Or, as mentioned above, equally radical is Pylos (SW Peloponese), Nikos Pilotis in the chandlery above the marina will look after your boat. 4hr 30min by bus to Kiffissou (Athens). Nitty gritty detail on my website.

Re: Frank\'s......

I agree with Steve about leaving boats in the places mentioned. Personally, I wouldn't dare to leave my boat at anchor in any Greek harbour because of the times that I've seen anchors fouled by others then just dropped without anyone bothering to make sure that they have reset properly. I've rescued 2 yachts that have been left to drift away (admittedly they were just anchored, not tied to a quay) and I've seen another that had its anchor warp cut by a huge gin palace just left to drift until it crashed into another gin palace. The crew then made it fast to their boat and claimed salvage - the last that I heard was that the lawyers were trying to sort it out.

Re: Frank\'s......

Strange I would never consider Franks yard in Porto heli, the amount of times I have seen him bounce yachts, as he takes them out of the water and across the road, there again he is very capable in repairing the damage ,at a price and he does look after you boat on the quay and I do mean "after "the damage is done.safe place to stay if you can afford the costs cheers bob t (all the above is alledged)

Re: Frank\'s......

Bob,
I think that you are being a bit harsh about Frank's Yard. Actually Frank has now retired (at 50!) and is off sailing the world on his large cat. The yard is now run by an Austrian.
I spent 2 years there and got lifted out each winter and am very well satisfied with the service. There were some very good workers there with a full range of skills.
Frank was certainly a character and would wind up some of his customers to breaking point but I found him to be very fair. You just had to make sure that you told him exactly what you wanted done and he would get it done.
I do agree that the first sight of a large yacht being driven along the road on a crane is a bit of a surprise but I've not heard of any damage from the trip.

Regards,
Henry

Re: Frank\'s......

Hi Henry. Ok ,a bit harsh but with a good bit of truth in it .Have not stayed there for more than 2 days running ,it used to have a good DIa supermarket .Now i see that Frank has sold part of the yard to a new modern supermarket . Have never been able to find a good Taverna there either In fact I find the place depressing.May be a good place to park a boat but not a good place Cheers bobt

If you just want to leave the boat, I suggest you leave it in a yard. Sousaki is a safe place, the guy uses a travel-lift, there is a guard and dogs. I left mine there twice for 6 months each time and nothing happened. OTOH he never produced the invoice for the money paid nor did he refund the VAT that he obviously forgot to pay. Sousaki is 2 miles from the korinth canal on the continental Greece side. Other yards that may be ok are Nikitakis in Elefsis and Koupetoris in Salamina (took the boat once for 4 months and was very pleased).

Re: Frank\'s......

Bob,

This poster is asking about leaving his boat somewhere safe for the SUMMER by which i would assume he means, in commission and ready for use. Yes that dreadful crane in the corner by the roundabout is barely adequate but we havn't been asked about laying up.

I hope that you are well?

Re: Frank\'s......

Agreed, Porto Heli is a dull place. But the moorings in the bay are fine for leaving a boat for a month.

Tried Rozos? Turn right off the quay, head round towards the Neilson place along the coast and after about 300m . . . run by a pair of brothers. Wonderfully kitsch decor. Locals use the place mainly.

I would second Methana. Very quiet harbour well sheltered with lot of places to eat in town Although not completely locked up it is surounded by a fence and has toilets and shower. The harbour master walks around fairly frequently and would probably look after your boat for a reasonable fee.
You also have the sulphated hot springs which if you go to the little bay are free! You do have to put up with the "bad eggs" which I dont find a problem.

Re: Frank\'s......

Hi Steve." Havent been asked about laying up!" WHen have we ever answered the question being asked? Also where do the people who ask the question disappear too?
As for my health only the good die young so ime in with a chance. Cheers mate. cheers bobt

As to tavernas,.....

...thats about right. Which is why it's a good "car park for yachts" and:- get there - (via Flying Dolphin) - stock up and go! Is the best attitude.

You know, I'm really getting to believe that I made the best decision by moving to the Ionian!

Re: Frank\'s......

Hi 'boss1'
The people who write the questions patiently read all the replies and I now have a good list of places to try.
As an earlier reply noted I need places for max one month each time with access to airport to return to UK and not find my wheel swapped for old one or a dent in the side!
All your advice has been appreciated.
