Sad tragic accident in Southampton

It does seem strange that a 2 day PB2 course can receive a commercial endorsement which can receive an ICC but in the ICCs listed required for commercial endorsements start from advanced and above
Out of interest Is the extra course needed for PB2
- the online one I had to do a few years back when I renewed my YM commercial?

It's the only way a skipper can gain more qualifications. They need sea miles to take the PBA which has a proper exam which if you are not up to scratch you fail.
I agree it's a big jump from pb2 to driving fast ribs. It's like passing a driving test and buying a Porsche and driving it on the motorway.

A sad situation for all involved
We went on the Shotover Jet in New Zealand a few years ago and to me it is a fine line between exciting and disaster with a lot of faith put in the ability of the person at the wheel and the systems on the boat when going through the walls of the gorge
I think with any thrill type ride there is always a element of risk involved

I'm amazed at the skill of the guy on the helm. Like you say, a matter of inches from disaster.

Tragic and we all feel the pain that the family are going through.

Freak accidents happen and it could be as simple as the skipper being distracted and never saw the buoy.

What ever the outcome it won’t bring the girl back

I won’t say where it was but I watched a jet boat thrill ride last year, probably more than 12 POB.

Pretty big company that I think has been around a while, went on one of their displacement boats and seemed reasonably professional.

But watching the jet bot leave the dock astern and spin around before taking off at high speed looked rather ‘dodgy’ had someone been passing behind and unseen. Pretty busy area for small craft.

A really sad event.

Thanks for posting up the report. We can't undo history but we can learn and hopefully avoid tragedy in the future. I have just altered a charter on the basis of the report.

I'm sure there will be readers who think it poor taste to post about the incident but it is vital to learn and avoid moving forward.

Think I missed this video the first time round. While that skipper is clearly very skilled and experienced, and also showed what looked to be good levels of care and professionalism towards his passengers, there were probably 100 different instances in that short trip where a mechanical failure could have led to a potentially fatal accident. The risks are probably not even considered by most of those onboard, but they are there and they are real. I don't think I would be happy with my kids going onboard a trip like that (although they almost certainly would if offered the chance).

Not need for PB2 but a pre requisite for advance is to have done the yatchmast thoery being a 6 day course

I think he means the Professional Practices and Responsibilities course which is needed for a commercial endorsement of any ticket.

For Powerboat Advanced you don’t actually need to have sat the YM Theory course but need to have knowledge to that level.
