This is a long shot - but anyone have any idea what new diesel engine would/might fit (or, at least, nearly fit) on 1972 Sabb 16HP engine bearers as they stand now?!

Beta Marine & Thornycroft will make engine bearers to suit for a little extra cost. In my case Beta charged £100 to make them wider to suit the original bearers but I still had to glass a 50mm pad on top to get the height but this was easy compared to removing the old bearers and fitting new ones.

Had a 20hp Beta fitted (lovely!) where a 10hp Sabb used to be - not sure what arrangements had to be made re. bearers but looks like additional glassing has gone in - Scott at TS Marine at Universal (Hamble) is the man to talk to.

Re: Sabb ... can\'t answer which engine but ...

I assume that you have checked that the bearers are still fine for use ... 30 odd years is a long time ...

The bearers in my 70's boat were oak or beech - can't remember now .. few years back ... they were taken out and angle iron fitted when I redid mounts etc. When I saw them out of boat - very glad they were replaced ... in boat looked fine ...

Thought I'd ask ...

Nothing specific. Its just pretty old (and has a complicated feathering prop). Like to have an engine that will definitely work!! (??)

The variable pitch prop is a big plus on my Halcyon (or any long-keeler) IMO. Prop walk is always in one direction (forward or reverse) and the boat can be motored at a snail's pace in tight situations with the prop partially feathered. I can also turn in the boats own length as long as it's to starboard, by just keeping the tiller over and moving the pitch lever between forward and reverse. It's one of the reasons I'd like to keep my old Sabb running. There's a knack to starting them, but once running it goes on forever.

V interesting. Thanks. Do you find you need to replace the thrust rings etc often (assuming its much the same as mine)?

Re: Sabb ... can\'t answer which engine but ...

The only time our Sabb has given us problems was down to the fuel being old and dirty.

Other than that as long as the battery isn't flat then it always starts. And if the battery is flat then you always have the option to start it by hand.

Is yours fresh, or saltwater cooled?

The only time it has stopped (in our short time together) the same thing happened - dirty fuel. I'm pretty sure (unless I'm missing something) it is sea water cooled. It is a 16 HP "2H" Sabb c.1972.
