PM forumite K-Ron as he is an accomplished Sabb-man. ;)

The thing that puzzles me is that there isn't a decompressor on the top of the cylinder. On the one fitted in my dad's Halcyon 27 (mid 60s!) the decompressor was the the only way to stop the engine, so it had to be easy to get at. It was also essential when handcranking it - you wound the flywheel up and then closed the decompressor, and with any luck it would start!

looks like it has some sort of dynostart system chap

the decompressor lever is out of sight on top of the silver valve housing

PM sent.
Pretty sure it's the 6/8 hp, model H.
Sleeman hawkin for spare parts in the UK, if you can cope with their grumpiness. :)

Thanks K-ron. It is installed in a Halcyon 27 and advertised as 6hp. I've only seen them advertised with 10hp on them. Didn't realise some had 6's. Not much chance of punching into a gale with it. Fortunately I think they can still sail into an 8 or so I have been informed. I may be finding out soon. :-)

For what it's worth, my Sabb 10HP is in a Nicholson 32 and our cruising weight is about 10 ton and we have not had any issues. Yes, it is massively underpowered by today's standards but if you don't mind getting your hands dirty and get that Sabb running sweetly it will be a reliable little beast.
Best wishes
Kieran

The Halcyon 27, and indeed the one referred to by AntarcticPilot above, were fitted with the Sabb 6-8 horsepower. It seemed plenty powerful at the time with lots of torque and very slow revving.

we've one of the 6 or 8hp ones in a halcyon clipper 27 which my dad has owned from new. never had bore wear. changed injector a few times. silencer baffles collapsed once, blocked exhaust completely, but the OP's pic looks like a "new" silencer (the original one was less boxy, and same colour as engine). water pump went funny once, but we took it apart, and cleaned the mushrooms, and put them back in... 1971. exhaust valve corrodes sometimes - we leave it at TDC now, and cover valves and stems in oil before leaving boat. that seems to stop it from happening. still got the dyno starter (some folk have put a toothed ring on flywheel+starter motor), which has been rewound once, and replaced once. i think that's all the trouble we've had in 46 years. bit underpowered by today's standards but keeping the hull clean is the trick. can just motor upwind in a gale at the beginning for the season (3tons). bearings - never changed them.
